CHS Career and Technical Education ag teacher attends STEM curriculum workshop
CARSON CITY, Nev. – Charles Mann, agriscience educator at Carson High School, recently attended an 8-day professional development institute at the University of Nevada, Reno to teach the Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) course in the CHS Career and Technical Education agriculture program during this school year.
CASE is an instructional system designed to change the culture of agriculture programs in the United States through intense teacher professional development; inquiry-based, student-focused lessons; assessment; and certification. CASE equips teachers to elevate student experiences in the agriculture classroom, and prepares students for success in college and careers emphasizing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
During the CASE Institute, Mann spent 65 hours working through nearly every lesson in the year-long curriculum and learning how to deliver lessons in an inquiry-based way that will shift focus in the classroom from teacher-led to student-directed learning.
“Agriculture touches every aspect of our daily lives,” Mann said. “This STEM enriched curriculum will challenge students on how they think about the impact of producing food, fiber and fuel for the world through agriculture.”
Carson High School’s CTE agriculture and natural resource management career cluster includes classes in ornamental horticulture and greenhouse management, natural resources and wildlife management, floriculture design and management, veterinary science and leadership and communication. Students must complete Ag 1 and Ag 2 prerequisite classes before choosing a career path after which they receive a science credit.
Agriculture is one of many CTE classes and programs offered by Carson High School designed to prepare students for post-secondary education and/or the world of work.

Carson High School’s Career and Technical Education program encompasses a vast number of classes and programs that teach today's students the high demand skills needed to get a job.
CTE better prepares students for post-secondary education and/or the world of work, whether they choose to enter the work place directly from high school, or select to pursue post-secondary education in a technical training program, apprenticeship, or a two, or four-year college. CTE prepares students for the world of work by introducing them to workplace competencies, and makes academic content accessible to students by providing it in a hands-on context.
