It's Your City highlights Carson City's 15th annual Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival

Friday opens the 15th annual Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival in Carson City that features 17 days of music, art and film at multiple venues in Carson City, August 3-19.

In this week's edition of It's Your City, host Cortney Bloomer sits down with David Bugli, President of the Mile High Jazz Band Association, a founding member and co-chair of the Jazz and Beyond planning committee. See the video interview below or go here to watch.

“Jazz & Beyond is a homegrown event celebrating the talent of our region and relying on many local music fans who donate their time and effort,” says Bugli. “Sponsors and volunteers help us make the event one of the best in the area, and keep performances admission free.”

The festival opens on Friday, August 3, at the historic Bliss Mansion, northeast corner Mountain and Robinson streets. An art show and sale on the porch at 4 p.m. features artists from the Nevada Artists Association. Music begins at 4 p.m. with the Rocky Tatarelli Band, followed at 6:30 p.m. by Cherie and John Shipley with the Take This band.

Two special events will be a talk and performance on World Percussion with Chance Utter assisted by Andy Heglund, The Batamba Collective, and members of the UNR World Percussion Ensemble on Thursday, August 9, at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, and a talk and performance on Virginia City’s Jazz Era by John Shipley and friends on Thursday, August 16, at the Nevada State Museum.

The third annual “A Day at the Silver Saddle Ranch,” 2648 Carson River Road on the east side of Prison Hill, will be on Sunday, August 12, beginning at 2 p.m. Bluegrass and Western music, live animals, and food trucks will be featured. Musicians are Chris Bayer, Dale Poune, the Sierra Sweethearts, and more.

Free concerts also will be held at the Capital Amphitheater, Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson Mall, Comma Coffee Courtyard, Bob McFadden Plaza, Brewery Arts Center, and other Carson City venues. Favorite and new performing groups include The Red Tango, Batamba Collective, Reno Jazz Orchestra, Mile High Jazz Band, and many more.

In 2018 the festival will feature more than 100 musicians in 50 or more events. Performers and events include (in no particular order) Batamba Collective (a percussion ensemble which is part of the World Percussion event on 8/9), CW Bayer, Carolyn Dolan, Mile High Jazz Band, Millennium Bugs, The Red Tango, Reno Jazz Orchestra, RoseBud’s Dance Band, Sagebrush Rebels Band, Laurie Blue, Sierra Sweethearts, Brandon Dodge Quintet, Strings in the Summer (concert), Zack Teran Band, Niall McGuinness and the New World Jazz Project, The Jackie Landrum Band, Echoes Band, Fantods, Bayberry Cast, Me & Bobby McGee, The Other Brothers Band, Whiskey and Lemons, Alex “Muddy”Smith, Mylo McCormick, Tom Miller, Rocky Tatarelli Band, No Comprende, Retro Radio Dolls, Me & Bobby McGee, Dale Poune, Colin Ross and Frank Jones, Whiskey & Lemons, Reno Swing Set, CeCe Gable Trio, and Take This (featuring Cherie and John Shipley).

In addition, as part of the Brewery Arts Center’s Levitt AMP series, several bands will perform during the festival.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.
