Carnival, wine tasting, live music and more: Carson City region lined up with 3 days of events

Heading into the Independence Day holiday weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to keep the next three days jam-packed with excitement.

On Friday, the Tahoe Blue Crew has scheduled beach cleanup days on 4H Beach, Tahoe Shores, Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines. The Nevada State Museum has Fourth of July festivities Friday through Sunday with train rides for kids of all ages.

The Virginia and Truckee Depot hosts its Stars and Stripes Weekend over the next three days in Virginia City from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the afternoon, head on over to the Mills Park for the July 4th Celebration and Carnival featuring dozens of rides and games. Maxx Cabello takes the stage at Minden Park at 6 p.m. during the Concert in the Park night in Minden. Disney’s Newsies returns to the Carson City Community Center at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Carson City Farmers Market will bring an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables to the corner of 3rd and Curry St. Capital City Bar Spin runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with bike rides around six local businesses to collect playing cards.

The best hand wins a beach cruiser. Two separate tours of the Nevada State Capitol take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A guided tour of the Mormon Station Historic Park in Genoa takes participants through the history of each landmark and learn about several fascinating stories. An old fashioned Fourth of July celebration will be held at Fort Churchill from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by the Wine Walk in downtown Carson City. Alex Nester and The Novelists will light up the Levitt AMP Summer Concert Series at 7 p.m. to cap-off an eventful Saturday.

On Sunday, Muscle Powered will host a morning bike ride at Fremont Elementary School at 9 a.m. Train rides to Virginia City from Carson City takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. An artifact talk at Mormon Station gives an in-depth examination of several artifacts and items living in the Carson Valley area from 100-plus years ago. Bilingual Storytime returns to the Carson City Library with books read in Spanish and English. To finish the weekend, The Young Fables headline the Genoa Concert on the Green from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Genoa Town Park, 2285 Genoa Street.

Friday, July 5

— Muscle Powered morning walk at Wellness Loop. 8 to 9 a.m. at the Carson Tahoe Medical Loop, 1470 Medical Parkway. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. Morning walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. If it rains, snows, air quality is bad because of smoke, or trail conditions are unsafe, meet at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center (MAC) at 1860 Russell Way.

— Help keep Lake Tahoe blue with scheduled beach cleanup days. 8 to 11:30 a.m. on 4H Beach, Tahoe Shores, Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines. Hosted by the League to Save Lake Tahoe. After the July Fourth festivities, our beaches are thrashed with trash. This trash can hurt wildlife and lake clarity. Be a part of the solution and help us this day to keep our beaches clean. We will provide refreshments, cleanup bags, gloves, and hand sanitizer. Please bring your reusable water bottle, gloves if you have them, sunscreen, your friends and family, and a smile! Each attendee will receive a raffle ticket for great prizes from Keep Tahoe Blue and our partners.

— Nevada State Railroad Museum steams up for Fourth of July festivities in Carson City. 9:45 a.m. Friday through Sunday at 2180 S. Carson St. The Fourth of July is all about celebrating history and the Nevada State Railroad Museum Carson City has its most historic showpieces shined up, steamed up and to share with visitors from Thursday, July 4 through Sunday, July 7. Each day’s festivities will begin at 9:45 a.m. with the “Parade of Trains” featuring the museum’s workhorse steam locomotive, No. 25, the 1910 McKeen Motor Car and the 1875 wood-burning standard gauge locomotive Inyo. Also operating this weekend will be the 1875 narrow-gauge locomotive Glenbrook. From 10:40 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, the No. 25 and McKeen Motor Car will be making alternating passenger runs on the museum’s tracks, allowing visitors to ride both trains.

— Stars and Stripes weekend at the V and T Railroad. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Virginia and Truckee Depot, 166 F Street. Celebrate the Fourth of July weekend with a diesel train ride along the historical V&T Railway and enjoy a day in Virginia City where you will feel you have been transported back in time. Free holiday goodie bag for every passenger.

— Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press ”” which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964. The press demonstrations will take place the last Friday of the month with two-person teams of volunteers not only working the press but sharing its history with museum visitors. The demonstrations will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

— July 4th celebration and carnival returns to Mills Park. 1 to 10 p.m. at Mills Park, 1111 East William St. The 4th of July Celebration and Carnival is presented by the RSVP and will feature fireworks on the 4th, carnival rides and games for all ages, great food and craft vendors, skate expo, live music on Thursday and Friday, DJ on Saturday and Sunday. Free admission, all day carnival wristbands $30, $5 discount coupons available at RSVP Beer Booth.

— Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St., Carson City. Join us to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or older to participate. — Concert in the Park featuring Maxx Cabello Jr. 6 to 8 p.m. at Minden Park, 1610 Esmeralda Ave. Welcome Maxx Cabello Jr. to the 2019 GE Family Concert Series “Concerts in the Park” at Minden Park on Friday, July 5th.

— Weekly Open Mic Night at the Zen Den Stage at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome. Saturday, July 6

— Carson Rifle and Pistol Club Rifle Match. 8 a.m. at the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range. The Carson Rifle and Pistol Club will hold two rifle matches Saturday, July 6th at the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range. The first match will be a Mini-Palma, followed by a Vintage Military Rifle match. The Mini-Palma is a 100 yard .22 rimfire rifle match. The course of fire is 45 shots in three stages, from either prone position or bench, slow fire. Suitable for most 22 rifles, either iron-sighted or scoped

— Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. — U.S. Citizenship Study Classes. 10 a.m. at the Carson City Library. In collaboration with the ESL In-Home Program, the Carson City Library offers free citizenship classes. The 12 classes will help prepare participants for the Naturalization Test by providing information, guidance, and individual support. Classes start May 4th, every Saturday from 10am-12pm on the second floor of the Carson City Library located at 900 N. Roop St.

— Stars and Stripes weekend at the V&T Railroad. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Virginia and Truckee Depot, 166 F Street. — State Capitol guided tours at the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— Park History Walk at Mormon Station Park. 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 2295 Main St. in Genoa. There’s far more to Mormon Station than meets the eye! Join Park Ranger fora “behind the scenes” guided tour of the grounds of Mormon Station State Historic Park, and learn about the fascinating history of this four-acre parcel of land. Participants will also tour park structures that are normally closed to the public.

— Nevada Authors of "Weird Carson City" to host a book signing at Morley's Bookstore. 12:30 to 4 p.m. at 201 W. King Street. Nevada Authors, Sandie La Nae and Special Works Historian Arline La Ferry will be presenting their "WEIRD Carson City" volume at Morley's bookstore on Saturday July 6, 2019. This book is one in their "WEIRD" series, with each volume filled with all sorts of trivia, fun facts, and fascinating information about our Capital town. La Nae states: "Over 260 pages of forgotten or lost history, present day information, and a surprise at the end."

— Old Fashioned Fourth of July to be held at Fort Churchill. 1 to 3 p.m. at the Highway 95A/Highway 50 intersection on Highway 95A at 10000 Highway 95A, Silver Springs, NV 89429. Silver Springs, Nev. – Celebrate Independence Day the old fashioned way with traditional games, homemade toys and crafts, and sweet treats from the 1800s. Activities for all ages will include: sack races, three-legged races, quoits (ring toss), bean bag toss, baseball, watermelon seed spitting contest, and hand-cranked ice cream. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch and plan to spend the afternoon enjoying the park.

— Wine Walk comes to downtown Carson City. 1 to 5 p.m. at 101 N. Carson Street. The Downtown Wine Walk is a must not miss! Held the First Saturday of every month from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. For just $15 you’ll receive a commemorative wine glass and endless reasons to stroll through Downtown sipping and tasting the afternoon away. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. — Levitt AMP Carson City: Alex Nester and The Novelists presented by the Change Companies. 7 to 10 p.m. at the Change Companies Outdoor Amphitheater, 449 W. King Street. The Novelists’ song “With Drawl” won Reno Gazette Journals’ Best Local Song of 2018 as they continue the climb in popularity in the U.S. They are a touring folk/pop band whose sound is built around multiple lead singers, four-part harmonies, and powerful storytelling through lyrics; their music aims to immerse the listener into vivid scenes —maybe of an elderly couple on a seventeenth-floor balcony or of two teens unknowingly parked at a murder scene. The Novelists’ ear-pleasing sound and cliffhanger storytelling reflects their influence from bands, like the Decembrists, and from writers, like Hemmingway.

— Carson City Ghost Walk returns on Saturday. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the McFadden Plaza, 310 S. Carson St. For the 27th year, the spookiest historical tour of the capital city is returning this Saturday, June 1 with the Carson City Ghost Walk. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a seasonal historical tour of Carson City’s west side, a walking history lesson with a touch of the supernatural. Some of the stops on the tour include the Bliss Mansion, the Ferris Mansion, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Rinckel Mansion.

Sunday, July 7

— Muscle Powered Sunday bicycle ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. Many of the artifacts in Mormon Station’s collection were very important items to people living in the Carson Valley area 100-plus years ago. New inventions have made some of these items obsolete, while others are simply no longer a part of day-to-day life for many people. As a result, sometimes the purpose behind artifacts isn’t obvious to us. Join park staff for a talk that will highlight select artifacts in the park’s collection and discuss their purpose.

— Bilingual Storytime at the Carson City Library. 1 to 2 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book in both English and Spanish. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.,

— Celebrate the Fourth of July with TOCCATA. 4 p.m. at Carson Valley Methodist Church in Gardnerville. The Tahoe Symphony Orchestra, also known as TOCCATA, helps you celebrate the Fourth of July spirit with family and friends, close to home. Our 14th annual “BOPS” concert, conducted by Maestro James Rawie, is a delightful summer event that we perform at Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville on Sunday, July 7 at 4 p.m. Additional performances/venues are listed below.) Revel in full orchestra and chorus performances of patriotic favorites, be swept off your feet by great opera arias, join in a sing-along, and, if you’re the highest bidder, conduct the “The Stars and Stripes Forever."
