Winter Round Up Run, Wine Walk and more: Carson City area prepares for weekend activities

Heading into the first weekend of 2020, there are several activities around the Carson City region lined over the next three days. Events include the Winter Round Up Run at Centennial Park, the Carson City Library 2020 Winter Reading Challenge, plus you can take a post-New Year's stroll while the weather is nice during Saturday's Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. Feel like getting in some laughs ahead of the weekend? Lisa Alvarado will perform Friday at the Carson Comedy Club. Read on. There's more.

Here's a rundown of activities over the next three days:

Friday, January 3
Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press ”” which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964.

Kids Cooking Class at Sierra Chef. 1 to 3 p.m. at 2292 Main Suites 3 and 4 in Genoa. Enjoy a wide array of delicious dishes Sierra Chef! We will be making tacos, fruit kabobs, hummus and fresh made tortilla chips. Classes cost $45 per person, please arrive on time.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Join us every Friday from 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must have waiver signed.

Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Sierra Songwriters gather at Comma Coffee. 6 to 9 p.m. at 312 S. Carson St. Singers and songwriters will gather at Comma Coffee in Carson City this Saturday. A unique collection of alternate songs will be played throughout the evening. Comma Coffee will offer meals, coffee, smooths, beer and wine throughout the event.

The Grumpy Old Men Dance Band at the Carson City Senior Center. 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Dr. Starting in January, the first Friday of every month will feature a dance band, The Grumpy Old Men, at the Carson City Senior Center. Doors open at 6:30pm. "The Grumpy Old Men" range in. age from 60 -90, that's a lot of experience. They're old, but they don't look very grumpy. They call themselves the Grumpy Old Men and they draw a crowd everywhere they go.

Lisa Alvarado to perform at the Carson Comedy Club. 8 p.m. at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St. Don't miss out on tomorrow's comedy show! Comedian Lisa Alvarado will be headlining The Carson Comedy Club Friday night! There is live comedy weekends at the Carson Nugget! Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets at the winner’s club or online.

Saturday, January 4
Carson City Club Scouts Collecting Christmas Trees for Camp Fundraising, Wildlife Sanctuary (All Day). Carson City Cub Scout Troop 341 of Carson City is asking community members for donations to help send our local scouts to cub scout camp this summer in exchange for recycling Christmas trees, which will be donated to a wildlife sanctuary for animal enrichment.

Winter Round Up Run. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centennial Park in Carson City. Join the brave, maybe a little crazy, runners on this beautiful trail run. This is the 3rd of 5 trail runs in the 11th Annual Be Bold, Run in the Cold – Winter Trail Series presented by Ascent Runs. Every run in the series will have two distances to choose from, a 5Kish and a 10K run. The 5Kish will usually be between 3-4 miles. The 10K+ will be anywhere between 6-9 miles depending on conditions.

Winter Wonderland Walk. 1 to 3 p.m. at Riverview Park, 841 N. Roop St. Bundle up and join us for this winter themed interpretive hike! Look forward to climate and snow discussions, in addition to how riparian habitat persists through bitter cold. Be sure to dress for the weather.

Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.

Downtown Carson City January Wine Walk. 1 to 5 p.m. Stroll Downtown Carson City and enjoy wine poured from over thirty locations. This is a perfect opportunity to experience everything the Downtown has to offer while participating businesses present special deals, entertainment and a variety of wines. At the end of the Wine Walk, head over to Alatte Coffee & Wine Bar, inside the Carson Nugget, for a chance to win great prizes donated by downtown businesses. Tickets come with each paid entry into the Wine Walk. Be sure to write in a selection for favorite Wine Walk stop at the bottom of each raffle ticket before turning it in. The raffle starts promptly at 5pm.

LEGO Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

Sunday, January 5
Carson City Library 2020 Winter Reading Challenge (all day). From Jan. 5-18, Winter Reading Challenge participants read a total of 14 hours, with extra raffle tickets earned for each hour of above-and-beyond reading. Prizes are also earned for registration and completion, and participants track all of their reading time in a simple app.

Muscle Powered Sunday morning bicycle ride. 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes.

Guided tour of the Nevada Museum of Art. 1 p.m. Tour the featured exhibition with one of the Museum’s trained docents during a regularly scheduled Guided Tour offered Thursdays at 6 p.m., Saturdays at 1 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Two School Resource Officers are on scene investigating why the alarm went off.

The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners heard a presentation from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) on the current status of the Highway 50 Preservation Project in Dayton.

Every day of every week, Skiing is Believing staff will help provide a variety of sports for kids to develop their physical skills and promote emotional development through exercise and community service.

After months of thorough community engagement and meticulous deliberation, Douglas County has announced the completion of its new Strategic Plan. This document, which will guide the County's decisions and resource allocation for the next five years, is the result of extensive input from both internal and external stakeholders.

The unpredictability of spring this first weekend of May continues with the threat of snow showers in the Sierra on Saturday, along with gusty winds and rain down to the valley floors for Carson City and surrounding areas. The storm system should moved out by Sunday morning.

Carson High School Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education students competed at the three-day state conference last month for Nevada Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. This was the first time the school’s programs participated in the conference. A total of 25 students competed in eight events.

Family fun, lively bands and historical characters return to Dangberg Historic Park in Minden beginning in May. Favorite presenters, bands and Chautauquans will be joined by new ones as well.

Carson City’s former Board of Supervisor and business owner Stan Jones was posthumously awarded Thursday the Historic Preservation Award for his long time work for downtown Carson City.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested three for their alleged involvement in business thefts last month on Topsy Lane south of Carson City.

The national issue of suicide — particularly among veterans — touched many people who attended the Walk for Hope on Wednesday morning at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

The new renovations at the Carson City Senior Center opened the opportunity to host art shows to extend enrichment to the senior community. Carson City Senior Center presents “Geographical Divides: Finding Common Ground,” featuring 16 artists who were asked to explore the geographical and cultural differences in Nevada, if such differences truly exist.

Meet Nash, Nevada Humane Society, Carson City branch Pet of the Week Nash. He's a striking 2-year-old German Shepherd who entered our shelter a couple of weeks ago due to his previous owner's moving. With Nash's handsome appearance and endearing personality, this young man captures the hearts of all who meet him.

Time to dust off those ten-speeds Carson City, because May is Bike Month in the capital city!

Carson City’s Muscle Powered hosts bike month each year in addition to their year-round volunteerism.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.

Carson Animal Services Initiative (CASI) would like to thank everyone who attended or contributed to our annual Bark Whine & Dine, held on April 27. What a wonderful event it was!
