Barnett homer lifts Wolf Pack to 1-0 victory
Brian Barnett's second-inning home run was the difference maker for the University of Nevada baseball team in its 1-0 victory at California State University-Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon.
Barnett, a former standout at Western Nevada College, hit the first pitch of the second inning over the right center field fence at Hardt Field to give the Wolf Pack a lead that stood the rest of the way. Barnett went 2-for-4 in the game, including his third home run of the season.
That was enough support for junior Brock Stassi, who pitched seven shutout innings, allowed six hits, and struck out a career-high 11 to earn his third win of the season. Stassi, a product of Yuba City, Calif., was originally scheduled to pitch on Sunday, but took the mound a day early in place of senior Chris Garcia, who is suffering from a sore arm. Garcia pitched last summer for the Carson City-based Nevada Bighorns.
Jeremy Cole retired each of the six hitters he faced in the final two innings to pick up his second save of the season. University of Nevada athletics:http://www.nevadawolfpack.com
