It’s a good weekend for the arts. Consort Canzona presents a free concert on Sunday: “Madrigals and Dances: A Celebration of Renaissance Music.” The ‘Music Man’ wraps up its successful run at the Community Center. The Capital City Community Band performs old favorites at Western Nevada College. And you won’t want to miss the Zephyrus Brass Quintet on the Dangberg Ranch lawn.

Bundle up, Carson City. We aren’t afraid of a little wind, are we? The Dangberg Home Historic Ranch is celebrating our infamous Washoe Zephyr this weekend with kite making, demonstrations, and more. The Friends of the Silver Saddle Ranch would love to see you at their open house on Saturday; if you’re an early riser, join them on a 7 a.m. bird walk. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is hosting their annual Cops and Kids Open House, so head to the courthouse for some fun.

Sunday, May 3: Things to do today around Carson City

The 2015 operating season begins this weekend at Nevada State Railroad Museum. Come on down and take a ride on the Edwards Motorcar Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rides are $4 for Adults; $2 for Children ages 4-11 and museum members; and FREE for Children ages 3 and under. The first Sunday of the month always sees a pancake breakfast at the Elk’s Club; let them take care of the cooking and clean-up!

Have you picked your pony yet? The Kentucky Derby is today, but that is far from the only thing running today. Chili on the Comstock is hosting their inaugural Fun with the Runs 5K Saturday at 10 a.m. The 1926 Edwards Motor Car is running, too, and ready for rides at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The wine walk is always a good time, and with Mother’s Day next weekend, it can’t hurt to peruse the shops before you run out of time to pick the perfect gift.

    Deadman's Creek guided hike Sunday at Washoe Lake

    Washoe Lake State Park is offering a guided hike Sunday to the overlook on the Deadman’s Creek Trail. This is a moderate, one-mile, round-trip hike, with a short, steep climb to the overlook (280 feet). Wildflowers are currently blooming along the trail so this will be an opportunity to take amazing pictures and learn about new plants.

    Sandoval: Governor's panel to study drought's 'great uncertainty'

    With Nevada withering in a fourth year of drought, Gov. Brian Sandoval on Wednesday announced formation of a panel of experts to explore a situation creating widespread problems across the nation's most arid state.

    The Nevada Drought Forum — composed of state resource agency officials, local water providers, scientists and other experts — is expected to release a list of suggested ways to respond to extended drought by the end of the year.

    It’s a good weekend to be a kid: the Kerak Shrine Circus is in town! Well, it’s in Reno, but that isn’t too far of a drive for elephants, clowns, and cotton candy. Also in Reno, but intended for a slightly older audience, is the Lady Luck Tattoo and Art Expo, coincidentally held at Circus Circus.

    For the outdoorsy-types you can join in the March to End Senior Hunger 5K in Dayton; the 5K Glow Run benefitting the Western Nevada College Softball Team; or join a ranger at Washoe Lake State Park for a guided hike.

    If you have the kind of luck that brings rain as soon as you wash your car, please drive over to Squeaky’s Car Wash at the corner of Highway 50 E and Lompa Lane. It’s their opening weekend and they are offering free car washes and raising funds for the Carson City Community Counseling Center.

    If you consider yourself adventurous, then the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry in Virginia City is for you. It’s not nicknamed the Testicle Festival for nothing! If you need some liquid courage, take part in the Ball Breaker Saloon Crawl. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade heads down C Street at noon.

    Today has a pretty short list, and to be honest with you, most of it is near Carson City, not actually in it. Enjoy the first day of the new year, make your resolutions, and go hiking if the chill doesn't scare you off.

    Guided New Year's hikes at Spooner and Washoe Lake state parks

    Get outdoors and celebrate the New Year with free guided hikes Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015 at Spooner Lake State Park near Tahoe or Washoe Lake north of Carson City.

    The Spooner hike will be a snowshoe one if there is adequate snow. The outing will follow the Spooner Lake loop trail, which is a little over two miles. Very little change in elevation makes this trail a family favorite. Park entrance fees are waived for hike participants.

    Drought to blame for dead fish at Washoe Lake

    On the receding shoreline of Washoe Lake, Alexandra Voss snapped photos of dead fish and sent it to News 4. She says there are hundreds of eyeless fish, and notes that there is no real odor, no flies, birds, or any other predator anywhere in sight.
    As mysterious as the Carp look, Chris Healy, spokesman for The Nevada Department of Wildlife, says he isn't surprised.
