Sunday, April 17: Things to do around Carson City

Sunday is fun day. Get ready for springtime flowers with the Anniversary Sale at Greenhouse Garden Center. If you can’t wait for your own flora to grow, join a ranger at Washoe Lake State Park during their Wildflower Walk to the Deadman’s Creek gazebo. Let the little ones burn off some energy at the Carson Car Center’s Grand Opening: free hot dogs, hamburgers, and a bounce house make for a fun time.

Parks around Nevada to receive federal grant money for upgrades

North Sunridge Park in the Indian Hills area of Carson City, Miner's Park in Virginia City, Fallon Pauite Shosone Tribe Park and Nevada State Parks are among a handful of publicly maintained sites to receive federal grant money to make improvements, Sen. Harry Reid announced Thursday.

Washoe Lake State Park events in April feature astronomy program, wildflower walk and hikes

Washoe Lake State Park is hosting a variety of events during the month of April, including a basic astronomy program focusing on year-round (circumpolar) constellations, a wildflower walk, a full moon hike and a guided hike through the sand dunes.

WASHOE VALLEY, Nev. – Hop over to Washoe Lake State Park this Saturday for an Easter celebration hosted by the South Valley Volunteer Fire Department. The Easter Bunny will make an appearance and the egg hunt will begin at 12:30 p.m. sharp. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Meet at the Group Use Area pavilion. Park entrance fees are waived for this event.

You’ll find Moses parting the Red Sea on the big screen, as The Ten Commandments makes its way to the Galaxy Theater as part of their Classic Movie Series. City Manager, Nick Marano, is the featured speaker at the monthly ‘Soup’s On’ Luncheon sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Raptors are visible in Carson City, too

The annual Eagles and Agriculture event kicks off this week in the Carson Valley, a wildlife viewing exhibition that attracts hundreds of visitors to the area to see birds of prey feeding and nesting below the eastern slopes of the Carson Range.

But Carson City residents don't have to leave the Eagle Valley to catch glimpses of raptors. We've got them in our own backyards.

Carson City deputies called after man reportedly shot off road in Goni area

UPDATE: 9:44PM: Carson City sheriff's deputies have reached the injured man and two others, and they were going to take the man down the hill to an awaiting fire department rescue crew who will take him to the hospital. The weapon has been secured. The man had minor bleeding and was reported to be in stable condition. Deputies are investigating.

UPDATE 920PM: Care Flight had been called but canceled due to weather. Carson City sheriff's deputies were still trying to get to the injured man as of 9:23 p.m.

Full moon hike at Washoe Lake State Park, history talks at Mormon Station

State parks has a couple of nearby events coming up next week. Washoe Lake State Park will offer up a full moon hike along the Deadman’s Creek Trail. Walkers and hikers will explore the park by the light of the full moon on this moderate, one mile, round-trip hike to the gazebo overlooking Washoe Lake.

Hello fellow anglers, there's a lot going on in our local fishing world, despite the weather. With Topaz Lake opening up and the higher lakes having good ice on them this year.

I've had as many reports this last week as I would in the middle of May. Before we get to our reports, I would like to do a little education about ice conditions in our area. Our local weather temperatures have been extremely cold during the end of last year and into this year.

The clock is ticking for last minute shoppers. Luckily, Carson City has great options for everyone on the list. Telegraph Square in downtown will be hopping with a Santa parade, vendors, and a pirate ship, in addition to great shops. The Brewery Arts Center is hosting a weekend-long art sale with one of a kind options throughout the campus. Art is a great gift, and making it is even more fun. Carson City Pottery is holding an open house today; a gift certificate for a pottery class is perfect for all skill levels.

Washoe Lake Exploration

Lured by the recent snow and cold temperatures, I got out for some exploration in Washoe Valley over the Thanksgiving holiday. While snow and cold might not sound ideal for riding a bicycle, it was my hope that the sand and mud would be firm for easy riding. Here’s a look at what I found.

Washoe State Park events feature holiday history slide shows, Christmas Eve full moon hike

Washoe Lake State Park north of Carson City will offer two opportunities to learn about past holiday traditions and local history plus a unique full moon hike on Christmas Eve.

Northern Nevada Christmas Past will be a family-friendly, Christmas-themed slide show that covers past holiday traditions combined with local history from Virginia City, Fort Churchill, Buckland Station and other areas of Northern Nevada. Rangers will also discuss origins of holiday traditions, including Santa Claus, candy canes and Christmas trees.

It’s hard to believe that Christmas morning is just one month away. First things first, however, is Thanksgiving. This weekend is shaping up to be a great time for hitting the slopes, but not so great for the holiday travelers with more snow expected for today and tomorrow. Enjoy a pre-turkey day evening at Living the Good Life: DJ Bobby G will keep you on the dance floor. Sassafras is your bet for live music with a blues/funk trio: the Wesley Orsolic Band.

The countdown to Turkey Day has begun, and living in Carson City gives us plenty to be thankful for: Beautiful views, our own deer herd, great shops, yummy restaurants, talented actors, artists, and craftsmen, and wonderful people. Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.

Ready for the weekend, Carson City? The weather should hold up on Saturday, but no promises on Sunday. Hit the slopes if you are so inclined, several Tahoe resorts have opened for the season. Runners should head out to Washoe Lake State Park for the first of the Be Bold, Run in the Cold series sponsored by Ascent Runs. If you prefer something warmer, head to Crossroads Lounge for their Grand Re-opening. It’s under new ownership and is sure to have something to keep you toasty.
