Vietnam War Veterans Remembrance Day & All Veterans Luncheon March 30, 2019 agenda:

10 a.m. — Reno Event Center doors opens

10:10 a.m. — Veterans officially “Welcomed Home” and thanked for their service. They, and the public are invited to avail themselves of services and outreach opportunities provided by veteran service organizations in Northern Nevada. Also available are static displays of Vietnam era equipment, a Vietnam mobile museum and music from the era with US Navy Veteran and DJ, Mr. Shane Whitecloud.

Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program will host its second Reaching For Zero: A Veteran Appreciation and Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness Brunch on Saturday, April 13 at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City.

The Carson City School District welcomes two new school board members: Lupe Ramirez, District 1, and Richard Varner, District 4. CARSON CITY — The motto at the Veterans Resource Center at Western Nevada College is “Veterans Helping Veterans.” For the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America the rallying cry is “One Generation of Veterans Passing It on to The Next.”

Roots Raconteur Ray Bonneville returns to Silver City for one exclusive show at the historic Silver City Schoolhouse, 385 High Street, on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.

Following are all of the entries for the 2018 Nevada Day Parade, to take place on Saturday, Oct. 27 starting at 10 a.m. The parade starts at North Carson and William streets, and ends at South Carson and Stewart streets. There are 215 entries in this year's parade.

The year 1968 was one of turmoil. The Vietnam War was intensifying, and protests were increasing back home. Martin Luther King Jr. and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy were both assassinated. Urban riots were common, and college unrest was widespread.

Welcome All Veterans Everywhere Inc. (WAVE) is eager to have the public attend the dedication ceremony for the new Veterans Appreciation Monument Oct 6 at noon. The monument honors the service and sacrifice of living and deceased veterans in Douglas County. It has been erected in front of the old courthouse on Eighth St. in Minden. WAVE has been working for over a year with county commissioners, local businesses and a host of volunteers to create the monument.

My loving sister, Susie Bongers, who moved to Carson City from Vietnam in February of 1973, attended Carson City schools until graduating from Carson High School in 1986, works with her mother and sister at MJ Beauty Salon, has been diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, the mother of all brain cancers.

Ground was broken Thursday, August 23 in a ceremony hosted by Welcome All Veterans Everywhere Inc,. also known as WAVE, for a monument honoring the service and sacrifice of living and deceased veterans in Douglas County. It will stand in front of the old courthouse on Eighth St. in Minden.

I had already written out this morning's column ahead of time when I learned of U.S. Sen. John McCain's passing.

His death has changed the course of my day, because now I am writing to remember the man who earned the media moniker of "Maverick," and the reputation of someone who usually went his own way.

United States Sen. John McCain, a former Vietnam War Prisoner and U.S. presidential candidate who had been battling an aggressive form of brain cancer, died Saturday at age 81.

Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program and multiple agencies from around Carson City will hold a Veterans Resource Fair on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Carson Nugget.

Veterans and their caregivers will be provided with information on services and programs provided by area non-profits, advisory groups, government agencies, and the private sector. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to Trip Advisor, the top 10 “most excellent cities in the world” are: Key West, Florida; Reykjavik, Iceland; Edinburgh, Scotland; Marrakech, Morocco; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Dublin, Ireland; Bali, Indonesia; Krakow, Poland; Glasgow, Scotland, and New Orleans Louisiana.

Former tribal court judge and pro tem Justice of the Peace Karl Neathammer will be the featured speaker at Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon.

Summer heat with a dash of all the right spices arrives in Carson City this Saturday and Sunday when Honor Flight Nevada hosts its annual High Sierra and Nevada Capitol Regional Chili Cook Off at Glen Eagles Restaurant in Carson City.

“You find the heart of an organization on the front lines,” new Carson Valley Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Jeff Prater said during his first day of work June 4. “That’s where the defining work is being done. That’s where our focus needs to be.”

This is going to be an epic Fathers’ Day weekend. Carson City Off-Road sponsored by Epic Rides has taken over downtown with everything mountain bike and plays host to a free Music Festival in McFadden Plaza. This first weekend of June packs quite a punch: activities and events abound. Head downtown for the first Third and Curry Farmers Market of the season, then wander a few blocks north for Due Sorella’s Spring Vintage Market. You may as well just keep the car parked. With the monthly Wine Walk, Pour for Paws in McFadden Plaza, and Crystal’s Crusade Street Party Fundraiser on W. Telegraph, downtown is the place to be. There are so many options this weekend, so take a gander and enjoy your weekend.

It’s not just Friday, it’s the very first day of June and I love June. We are already off to a great start with the first of the Friday at Third concerts tonight in McFadden Plaza. Shane Dwight is back to perform for this free, family friendly event. The NEA sponsored Carson Big Read event comes to a close tonight with a free showing of 2010’s movie, True Grit in the Community Center Theater. Take the kids to the Children’s Museum for a special Night of Magic with Phoenix Phenomenal.

The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., has reached Douglas County where it is being presented for the first time in Minden beginning Thursday.

Honor Flight Nevada, a nonprofit organization that takes Silver State veterans to Washington, D.C. so they may visit memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices, held its Memorial Day pancake breakfast at Atlantis Casino Resort in Reno Monday.

CARSON CITY — Carson’s Got Talent, an evening extravaganza of regional talent at the Bob Boldrick Theater, April 14 at 6:30 p.m., announced its panel of celebrity judges this week.

On Saturday, northern Nevadans honored the inaugural National Vietnam War Veterans day through two ceremonies, one in Carson City at Mills Park and the other in Winnemucca.

Thursday is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Carson City Manager Nick Marano and Mayor Bob Crowell invited all veterans who work for the City to stop by City Hall for a photo so that they may be recognized and celebrated for their service by all community members.

If your new year’s resolution includes volunteering, the Muscle Powered Trash Mob is a quick, but mighty, helping hand.
