Labor Day Weekend Highlights

Carson City:
Saturday – Monday: Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum. Rides begin approximately every 40 minutes, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fares are $8 for ages 12 and over; $4 for ages 4 to 11 and Museum members; and FREE for ages 3 and under.

Double Trouble featuring Michael Furlong and Terry Jayo as Tom Petty and Bob Seger will play a concert at the Carson Nugget on Sunday, September 4th at 7PM. Tommy Rocker will open for the band and give a special performance after the concert.

HopeFest6, a free outdoor concert with headliners, “The Waybacks” is set for Friday at Carson Tahoe Cancer Center. All proceeds from food, refreshments and raffle ticket sales directly benefit local cancer patients undergoing lifesaving medical treatment, providing support for basic needs that go beyond the hospital walls.

The weekend has arrived and there are festivals everywhere. A Basque Festival and Picnic can be found in Gardnerville. Bowers Mansion hosts a Bluegrass Festival for the 31st year. Ta-Hoe Nalu Paddle Festival returns to King Beach for the weekend. The Annual Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has infiltrated the whole valley with musicians. SATURDAY:

The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation is pleased to recognize the generous support and $10,000 grant funding recently announced by the Safeway Foundation.

The Fuji Park Fairgrounds rocked Friday night with the sounds of contemporary Country music legends Tim McGraw and Garth Brooks at the Celebrate Carson City Country Tribute Concert.

The community of Carson City has been awarded official commemoration by the United States Department of Defense for its efforts to honor and recognize Vietnam War veterans, Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell said.

Fifteen days of non-stop music begins tonight at the Bliss Mansion with the Jazz and Beyond Garden Party; don’t miss out on the fabulous art show, tours of the historic home, and great jams. Downtown will be rocking tonight as the Carson High Class of 86 celebrates their reunion in Telegraph Square with two live bands. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Just down the street, Living the Good Life welcomes Southbound Train followed by DJ Bobby G. Fuji Park is the place to be for cowboys, broncs, and a great concert celebrating Carson City.

A large crowd gathers Thursday for the final reception of the Always Lost: A Meditation on War exhibit at Western Nevada College in Carson City. The event was also held as a celebration of life for exhibit co-founder Marilee Swirczek, who died July 17.
The photo exhibit, which opened at WNC in 2009, memorializes the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans and their families.

The second annual Carson City Kiwanis Johnny Cash Tribute Concert is pulling into the station on August 13, 2016. Jimmie Ray and Cyndi Cantrell and the Black Train will be headlining at Piper’s Opera House for two shows on that day, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

This is the 4th year Jimmie Ray and Cyndi Cantrell and Black Train have performed at Piper's Opera House. All money raised will benefit the Kiwanis of Carson City to continue to support seniors and children of Carson City. There are two shows to choose from 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm, tickets are $25.00 each. Fuji Park Fairgrounds in Carson City is going to be the hottest place in town on Friday, August 5 and Saturday, August 6 when two new and exciting events come to town.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval today signed Executive Order 2016-19, ordering all flags at the State Capitol and State public buildings and grounds to be flown at half-staff effective immediately and until Tuesday, July 12, 2016 as a mark of respect and in remembrance of the victims in Dallas, Texas.

Sunday is the day before Independence Day, but Sparks is getting a jump on the festivities with their Star Spangled Sparks Celebration and fireworks. King’s Beach always celebrates early, so you can catch fireworks at the northeast end of Tahoe, as well. Keep reading: the weekend is in full swing.

Holy moly. Carson City is hopping with fun times for everyone. Enjoy Saturday downtown with the Third and Curry Farmers Market, the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk, and a free concert at the Brewery Arts Center. Mills Park features the return of the RSVP Carnival with rides, food, booths, games, and more.

It is primary election day in Nevada. For Carsonites who didn't vote early, you can choose to vote at the Community Center or at the County Clerk's office, regardless of precinct. Join the Nevada National Guard at the Capitol for their Flag Day ceremony and celebration of the Army’s birthday. Mile High Jazz Band has something special in store. Their monthly concert will be held in the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall, and features guest soloists, poets, and more. Continue on for even more things to do in Carson City.

TUESDAY: Primary Election Day

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. A few days left of school, a few days left of May: summer is knocking on the door and insisting to be let in. If only it would bring some sunshine with it, we’d be set. Get the weekend started with a good time downtown: Stereo Galaxy at Westside Pour House, comedy at the Nugget, and a DJ at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. Party 80s style at Whiskey Tavern’s karaoke party. Minden kicks off a summer of Concerts in the Park tonight with a tribute to the Beatles.

Friday: The Comedy Club presents Justin Rivera at 7pm. He will have you doubled over and begging for more. Then head over to the Alatte Coffee and Wine bar where we offer a relaxing atmosphere for those wanting to enjoy a glass of our fine wine selections, or who are hungry and looking to enjoy the sandwiches, pizza or wings that are making Alatte such a hit.

After the comedy club you can head over to Sports Bar to enjoy the smooth sounds of Escalade. This popular local favorite will have you out of your seat and dancing until the bewitching hour.

The $10,000 four-year Dave Cook Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Elaine P. Wynn and Family Foundation in partnership with the Nevada Public Education Foundation for an incoming freshman pursuing an Education degree at a Nevada System of Higher Education institution beginning in fall 2016.

Carson City-based Pets of the Homeless, the only national nonprofit organization that is focused on feeding and providing emergency veterinary care to pets of homeless people, was recognized for their outstanding achievements as a family owned business and for making significant contributions to the community and giving back.

There’s nothing unlucky about this Friday the Thirteenth. Spring is in full bloom, the sun is shining, and the weekend is hours away. Beers and Brats returns to Fuji Park; the girls of Nevada Sharks Fastpitch look forward to seeing you. Join Alex Woodard, Molly Jenson, and Ike Marr as they present the letters and songs of For The Sender: Love Letters from Vietnam in an intimate setting to benefit DAV, a non-profit that provides a lifetime of support to veterans of all wars.

Under rainy skies and the heaviness of a tragedy that wounded a community, law enforcement officers from around the state assembled at the state capitol grounds Thursday to pay tribute to Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell, the 129th Nevada law officer to die in the line of duty.

It is Teacher Appreciation Week and there are a lot of amazing activities going on at our schools. Each school has their own events, but we asked everyone to hashtag the fun with ‪#‎ThankATeacher‬
