Nevada Business Leaders Say Legislation Pending In Congress Will Kill Jobs

RENO – Several Nevada business leaders took the opportunity of the upcoming Labor Day holiday to speak out today against federal legislation they say will kill jobs in Nevada at a time when the unemployed total more than 20 percent.

Big weekend in Carson City for jazz fans

Jazz Carson City 2010 will wind up this weekend with a Friday night appetizer followed by a Saturday and Sunday blowout.

It’s all under the umbrella of the Mile High Jazz Band, which offers a five-singer tribute to Count Basie Saturday night from 8 to 10 p.m. at the 3rd Street site.

Nugget Project developers present three visions of new downtown Carson City

The chosen developer of the Carson City Center, also known as the Nugget Project, presented three different options of what the project might look like tonight at the Carson City Community Center. (See the play-by-play notes here.)
The plans presented were best-case scenarios, since the feasibility studies are not yet complete.
The plans all had the same basic pieces that included the library/discovery center, office buildings, retail space and a parking garage.

National Group Says Nevada Minimum Wage Hike Hurts Teen Hiring, Union Official Disagrees

CARSON CITY – It may be welcome news for those who have entry level jobs, but a more than 9 percent hike in the minimum wage to take effect Thursday in Nevada will have a chilling effect on hiring, particularly for teens, according to one national group.
A Nevada union official disagrees, saying the minimum wage hike isn’t to blame for the state’s record jobless rate or the high unemployment levels seen among teens in the workforce.

NRC Orders Licensing Board to Make Decision on DOE’s Motion to Withdraw License for Yucca Mountain

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) this morning voted to overturn the U.S. Atomic Energy Safety and Licensing Board’s order to suspend the Yucca Mountain administrative hearings.
The NRC has ordered the licensing board to make a decision on the Department of Energy’s (DOE) motion to withdraw the license for Yucca Mountain with prejudice by June 1.
