With the wildly festive Nevada Day weekend now behind us, a busy week is ahead as we begin to close out October and prepare to celebrate Halloween in the capital city. Activities Monday include a lunch discussion with the director of the Toiyabe Chapter of the Sierra Club, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Counting down the hours until the Nevada Day weekend celebration begins, we're heading into Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019 with sunny skies in the forecast through Sunday. Thursday opens the first of the four-day annual RSVP Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park with $1 ride family night hosted by Carson City Toyota. Other activities around the capital city include a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, art showings, library activities, a gold and silver rush presentation at the Nevada State Museum and more.

We're days away from our celebration of statehood and the weather around the capital city couldn't be more, well, Nevada-like with daytime highs near 70 and sunny skies. Carson City area activities ahead for Wednesday, Oct. 23 feature an economic roundup presented by the Northern Nevada Development Authority at Casino Fandango, Carson Tahoe's annual "Spooktacular" family event, Firehouse Subs will host our local Search and Rescue for a dinner fundraiser; Sierra Nevada Journeys and Nature Conservancy will present family STEM night in Genoa, plus art showings and more. know it’s weird. But every Fall, I don’t rush for the pumpkin spice lattes and the sweaters. It takes me awhile to embrace what some would call their favorite season. It usually takes until about now, a few days before Nevada Day, to notice that the loss of my beloved summer is turning into something new — the holiday season.

Going into Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019 more sunny skies and warm fall temperatures will continue to shine on the capital city as we prepare for the Nevada Day weekend. Ahead Tuesday include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a "haunted" cemetery tour at Lone Mountain, a business networking meeting at Casino Fandango and the Fat Tuesday business networking group at Carson Nugget, archery at Centennial Park and more. Going into the final stretch of the work week Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019 will bring cool conditions, a slight chance of rain and some sunshine. Activities around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, a Muscle Powered hike at Silver Saddle Ranch, a rally at the legislative building, modern western square dancing lessons, art showings, library activities and more. Enjoy the day.

While haze from nearby Sierra fires may linger some, we're looking at another pleasant fall day around the capital city heading into Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019. Events locally include a ribbon cutting and outdoor moving showing at the new Schulz Ranch Park, workshops, a women's safety meeting, a pumpkin patch for kids at Carson Mall, plus art showings and public talks. After hours it will be toasts, cheers and business networking all around at the Dayton Taphouse. Enjoy the day.

Heading into Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019, it will be a busy day ahead around the capital city including a Carson City Chamber of Commerce luncheon with Nevada's chief economist, a GOP Women's Club luncheon with Nevada State Senator James Settelmeyer, Sierra Lutheran will host its 7th and 8th Grade Visitation Day, plus a morning walk, evening hike with Muscle Powered, archery at Centennial Park, art night at the library and more. With November approaching and Thanksgiving around the corner, Dayton Urgent Care will be collecting non-perishable items for local families now until Nov 15. Item such as boxed stuffing, gravy, canned veggies, boxed desserts, boxed potatoes, canned yams, canned soups and soup mix. In the past years we have had such a great turn out with our other drives.

During Thursday’s Board of Supervisor’s Meeting, the Board voted on a measure to transfer ownership of the site of the Brewery Arts Center into the hands of the Brewery Arts Center themselves. For the past 40 years, the City has held ownership of the property at 449 King Street, and has been leasing the property to the organization.

The site of today’s Brewery Arts Center has gone through several changes in its time. The Carson Brewery was first built in 1860 by John Wagner, who created the brewery during the Comstock rush to wet the whistles of all those hoping to become the next gold-rush billionaire, and it became Nevada’s longest-operating brewery to date.

Registration is now open for the the 2019 Carson City Turkey Trot, a local holiday tradition where hundreds of runners and walkers, some dressed in Thanksgiving costumes, get in a good fitness workout ahead of their respective family afternoon holiday feasts.

There will be a September 11 memorial event at Mills Park in Carson City this Wednesday. The service will take place at the 911 memorial beginning at 6 p.m. The event is hosted by Carson City Christian Ministerial Fellowship. Guest speakers are Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, Sheriff Ken Furlong, Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon and pastors from local ministry.

I just finished Barbara Kingsolver’s Flight Behavior, a heart-wrenching story about monarch butterflies, their migration and the destruction of their habitat. Although fictional, the author provides detailed scientific information about their physiology, migratory behavior, food sources and how scientists study these amazing creatures called “King Billies” in the book.

Recently, several CHS freshman Biology classes had the opportunity to work with fourth graders from Empire Elementary in Carson City. Students learned about conservation, the water cycle, and the Carson River watershed. CHS students, trained by the River Wranglers conservation group, and on a very windy day, met up with Empire Elementary students at Baily Pond.

CARSON CITY — Nicolas Jacques, music teacher at Carson Middle School, was honored last night as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year. Additionally, James “Jim” Pike, special needs school bus driver for transportation, was recognized as the Education Support Professional (ESP) Employee of the Year for the district.

A Carson City drywall laborer was arrested Thursday night at 7:40 p.m. in the area of Fifth and Stewart streets on two felony counts of uttering a forged instrument and a misdemeanor charge of ex-felon failing to register, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

The Dayton Food Pantry hit its goal to collect and distribute 300 turkeys during the days leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday.

“I can't thank everyone enough. During November, the community helped the Pantry reach 1,250 people who needed food," said Pantry manager Alie Trier.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office detectives have linked a series of crimes, including robbery, burglary and auto burglaries over Thanksgiving week that originally began Nov. 18 in the Goni Canyon area of North Carson City, a sheriff's office captain said.

For more than 60 years, the Carson City Nugget has been feeding he community with a free Thanksgiving feast, and this year was no exception. Together with Friends In Service Helping (FISH), hundreds of people enjoyed a hot, home cooked meal served up by community volunteers.

“Run Now, Gobble Later,” said the Turkey Trot sign, and Carson City runners seemed to be all in. Even with the wet streets from rain earlier in the morning.

The Turkey Trot began at 8:30 Thanksgiving morning in front of the Governor’s Mansion, and the adorably named “Gobble Wobble” kids run began at 8:45.

Pinkerton Ballet Theatre presents the 30th anniversary of The Nutcracker Ballet featuring a live orchestra in Carson City this Thanksgiving weekend.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23-24, 2018 at 7 p.m., and a matinee on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, Bob Boldrick Theater.

This morning appears to be in between weather systems, which is good news for those headed to the Governor's Mansion for the annual Turkey Trot. It may be soggy, but not heavy on the rain side.
