Teacher Appreciation week across the United States was May 7-11, and many teachers in the Carson City School District experienced appreciation unequaled in memory.

SILVER CITY — Megan Berner, the current Resident Artist in Silver City, will offer adults and teens a free "Introduction to Cyanotype” workshop during a meet and greet and free workshop on the cyanotype process on Sunday May 6, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Silver City School House (community center) at 385 High Street.

Take the kids down to Bailys Pond at Fuji Park for the annual Tom Brooks Memorial Kids’ Fishing Day. A trip to the train museum comes with the opportunity to ride on the Historic McKeen Motor Car.

The Carson City Symphony’s Youth Strings Ensemble takes to the stage today for their spring concert, Music is for Life (Goes to the Movies), where you will hear them perform selected scores from our favorite cinema classics like James Bond and the Sound of Music. Teens can learn more about Geology during today’s STEM program at the Carson City Library, and those with a Sewing Certification can join in today’s workshop and walk away with a handy zippered bag.

The Senior Center recently hosted ‘Carson’s Got Talent,’ so they know the caliber of performers hidden in our midst. Auditions for their annual show, Senior Follies, continue this evening and are open to all ages. CCAI’s art exhibit in the Community Development Building on E. Proctor features work from several high school artists. Join them in celebrating this young talent at a reception tonight. The day should be gorgeous; a hike with Muscle Powered is the perfect way to embrace the spring.

In an effort to address social and emotional needs of students, CHS is presenting the SOS (Signs of Suicide) Prevention Program.

Freshman health classes were the first reached in February. The JROTC students and health science classes are next.

Another storm system is expected to bring widespread light to moderate snow throughout the Carson City, valley and Sierra regions Thursday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory.

Much of Northern Nevada and Eastern California will be dealing with frigid temperatures and lake effect snow in areas across the region over the next few days, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.

Battle Born Social is hosting a Un-Valentine's Roaring 20s Party and hoping to see some zoot suits and flapper dresses while they serve era-inspired cocktails and appetizers.

Carson City Parks and Recreation is stepping up to the plate with pizza and a movie if you are looking for a way to get out without the kids in tow. You’ll want to register for Parent’s Night Out before all the spaces are filled. Hit the town and discover what new restaurants have popped up this last year. Enjoy live music at Living the Good Life, Bela Vita Bistro, or at the historic Genoa Bar. Teens are welcome at the Boys and Girls Club for a night of dancing, music, and a chance at raffle prizes.

FRIDAY, Feb. 9: Things to do in Carson City

You won’t find this Wednesday lacking when it comes to stuff to do, explore, and enjoy. The annual Carson High Talent Show always delights and thoroughly entertains the audience. Comma Coffee is hosting a reception for their newest display, the ‘Break These Chains Live Free’ Art Exhibit, featuring the winning pieces from a high school contest designed to bring awareness to human trafficking. A cute new shop downtown, Rustically Divine, celebrates it’s Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting.

Creative teens from Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties have been selected to receive Scholastic Art Awards in the first round of the 2018 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards featuring young artists throughout Northern Nevada. 

My column is late this week. And, you know what? It’s OK. It’s OK because done is better than not at all. It’s OK because I can get out of my head long enough to forgive myself for how busy I have been. And, guess what else? It’s OK for you to just get things done too.

Many a romantic tune has been written about the moon: Blue Moon, Dancin’ in the Moonlight, Fly Me to the Moon. Channel the rare blood blue moon eclipse into something creative and enter the ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ Short Film Competition that begins today. Get a beautiful view of the full moon in picturesque Washoe Valley during a guided hike at the state park, just make sure to reserve your spot first. Something sweet is in store today at Baskin Robbins; they are celebrating ‘31’ with $1.50 scoops all day, and with the spring-like weather, ice cream might not be a bad idea.

Here we are, toward the end of January, with practically no snow to speak of; but, if all indications are correct, we will have some winter weather blowing in by day’s end. Warm up with some hot jazz at Living the Good Life. It’s always a party when the boys of J and M Productions host karaoke night at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge.

The CCAI exhibit in the Courthouse Gallery, ‘Wish You Were Here,’ by artist Susanne Forestieri, closes tomorrow. You won’t want to miss your chance to see her stunning work. Galaxy Theater brings a different flashback film to the big screen each week. Enjoy the exploits of Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they uncover the Chamber of Secrets.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office investigators have arrested two juveniles in connection to the commercial burglary that happened Wednesday at the Fairview Market in Carson City.

UPDATE: Two 14-year-old males have been arrested for suspicion of burglary after being identified from video, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office investigator.
Evidence located near their residence connected them to the Fairview Market burglary.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is seeking information to identify a person responsible for a commercial burglary early Wednesday morning in which the suspect left a blood trail after apparently suffering significant cuts.
