Say No to Campus Carry
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 02/19/2015 - 8:02pmDear Editor:
I am opposed to the Concealed Carry Bill AB 148 for a myriad of reasons.
Firstly, students and teachers don’t feel safe, meaning that this will effect our learning environments. Students and teachers alike will be more worried about someone pulling a weapon out in a fit of anger and using it than they are about the educational topic they are discussing. I’m sure the need, and therefore cost, for security around our schools, public buildings, daycares, and colleges will rise as well.

Column: In tax terms, what is worthless security?
Submitted by editor on Tue, 02/17/2015 - 3:23pmA security (stock or bond) that becomes worthless during the tax year is treated as if it had been sold on the last day of the tax year. If it is a capital asset, the resulting loss is usually a capital loss that is subject to various limits.
Capital losses first offset capital gains (both long term and short term) including the capital gain distributions from various mutual funds. And, if that does not use all of the losses, then $3,000 can be a deduction on page 1 of form 1040 (U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) with the excess carried over to future years.

This morning, I made a conscious decision to be grateful for all I have. No matter how smooth flowing or choppy the river of life is there is always something to be grateful for — even if it is, as a friend of mine said this weekend, “two-ply quilted toilet paper.” Hey, it is good stuff.
