Outdoors with Don Q: Personal resolutions for the year 2012

It’s the very first part of January and this is a good time for all of us to make some personal resolutions for the year 2012. Most importantly, remember that if you do make any resolutions, be sure to follow through with what you resolve to do in this new year. I have a number of things I would like to accomplish this year, so without any further ado, here are my resolutions:

The Annual Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons

Each year, as my last article for that year, I present my Annual Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons: Outstanding, good, not so good, bad, serious, funny, dumb, head-scratching, are-you-kidding, etc.
Those annual awards are presented to all kinds of people or places or things for what has occurred throughout the year. It’s an interesting way to end the year, so here are my 2011 winners:

Topaz Lake Opener on New Years Day

This is a reminder that Topaz Lake, which is located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, will open its 2012 fishing season, one half hour before sunrise, on Sunday, Jan. 1.

How to get there:

Take U.S. 395 south from Carson City for about 40 miles.
Where to fish from shore:
Along the beach at the north end.
On the far shore, past the Douglas County campground.
On the California side, along U.S. 395.

Where to fish from a boat:

Outdoors with Don Q: Topaz Lake to open to fishing on New Years Day

This is my annual pre-Christmas reminder that Topaz Lake, located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, will open its 2012 fishing season, one half hour before sunrise, on January 1.
If the weather is decent, if you don't have a massive hang-over, if you like to fish and if you don't have anything else planned, this could be a fun way to start the New Year.
