The Capital City Brewfest is moving to late August this year due to Covid-19 concerns. Originally scheduled for June 20, the annual event will now take place on August 29 in Downtown Carson City.

Spring has sprung and new green leaves are starting to push through, along with the first flower buds on fruit trees, and the always too-early daffodils that pop up before first frost ends. Soon the pastures will be green again and Spring and Summer flowers will come through and liven up our region.

Gov. Steve Sisolak will extend the state’s shutdown order to an as-yet undetermined date and close schools for the rest of the academic year, but he will allow some businesses to reopen if the state sees a consistent downward trajectory of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

Happening now through April 25 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the valuable role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. This week, the Carson City Library invites all community members to find the library at their place by visiting www.carsoncitylibrary.org to access virtual services and resources.

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners on April 16 approved 3 to 2 a bond issuance for the Tahoe South Event Center, the final step in the project’s approval process.

The Carson City Library will host a community read of My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir for Capital City Reads, Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club.

Capital City Reads takes place every April as a celebration of National Library Week, bringing people together through reading and discussion.

This year’s program starts with National Library Week on April 19 and will run through May 16.

STATELINE, Nev. — Lakeside Inn and Casino on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe announced Tuesday that it won't reopen after the coronavirus concerns are over. It is the first Lake Tahoe gaming property to permanently close.


My gardening clothes stink and I’m a happy woman! I’ve been pruning a Rhus trilobata, commonly called skunkbush sumac. Its name tells the story. I should have left my malodorous garments outside rather than carrying that pungent scent into the house. Oh well, I don’t care. I’m happy because I’m pruning. It takes so little to put a smile on my face.

This is the time of the year when the summer concerts are announced, but that all came to a halt with the pandemic. However, one venue has elected to let music fans know what should be in store this summer.

To our Community: The Greenhouse Project board in conjunction with John Procaccini and Chili Bop Productions, has concluded that in light of the current COVID-19 situation, this year’s Concert Under the Stars is cancelled. This event has taken place the last 11 years in order to grow a thriving agricultural education program on the campus of Carson High School.

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the 2020-2021 county’s Tentative Budget on April 1, 2020. The County Manager and Comptroller have recommended the budget with no salary increases and a projected 6.6% ending fund balance which is lower than the 16.67% authorized by Nevada Revised Statutes.

The County Manager also recommended that the Board not fund any of the 35.8 positions requested by the various departments including:

1 Information Systems Technician
1 Community Development Director
1 Public Works Director

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Departments of Transportation and Wildlife and the Nevada Highway Patrol are reminding motorists to drive safely in wildlife-prone areas with the onset of spring animal migration.

In light of ever-increasing Coronavirus fears and the CDC recommendations that people, especially those in high-risk groups, avoid crowds and public gatherings; Catmandu has regretfully decided to postpone the Birthday Bash party scheduled for March 28 at the Carson Nugget until June or July.

The monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk takes place Saturday followed by a performance from Tom Petty and Rod Stewart tribute bands during The Do Drop In’s “A Face in the Crowd” homeless fundraiser at Fuji Park. I turned my sprinklers on this past week. So did my gardening neighbor Roni. Her comment was “Ugh!” Mine was “On. Off. Drain. Repeat.” Turning drip systems and sprinklers on and off is tedious, but necessary. We haven’t had enough rain or snow to thoroughly soak the ground.
