College and university advisers and representatives from around Nevada met with students Thursday as part of Transfer Day at Western Nevada College in Carson City. The advisors and reps met with students who are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university as they continue to build on their WNC associate degree.

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 36th season on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, at 4 p.m., with an “Overture of the Season” concert at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater.

CHS has many opportunities for students to become a part of something bigger than just themselves, not that making a name for oneself is a bad idea or anything, but it is up to the student to step on up, come on in, and check them out. There are so many clubs on campus; there are Interact Club meetings at lunch in CHS teacher Erin Been’s room every Thursday, and Been also advises the Represent Club.

On Thursday evening, Pioneer High School JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) students participated in their annual Initiation and Installment Ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion.

The JAG program at Pioneer High School has made positive changes since its implementation just a few years ago. The JAG program teaches life skills to students and allows them to learn skills such as public speaking, taxes, how to apply for scholarships, car loans, and of course, resumes and cover letters, among many other topics.

On Wednesday, October 16, the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) will present a public talk, “Why Did You Choose Justin Favela?” by Nevada Museum of Art’s curator, JoAnne Northrup. The event is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors speakers’ series and will take place at 5:30pm at the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Northrup preceding the event at 5pm. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the final V&T Railway train rides of the 2019 season, the 27th annual Carson City Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary School, fundraisers around town, coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum, comedy at the Carson Nugget and more!

A 43-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in the area of Fall and William Street for allegedly trying to fight a Pioneer High School student and throwing rocks at the school.

Heading into Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 and we're looking at continued sunshine and cool temperatures, with some warming in time for the weekend. Activities ahead around the capital city feature a workshop by Carson City TRIAD to prepare residents for Medicare open enrollment, a Muscle Powered led afternoon hike at Sedge Road, the grand opening of My Place Hotel, modern western square dancing lessons, art showings, library activities and more. Jobs for Nevada’s Graduates, also known as JAG Nevada, a statewide high school dropout intervention and work readiness program, welcomes Mario Mongolo as the new Regional Coordinator in Northern Nevada based in JAG Nevada’s Reno office responsible for the coordination of JAG programs throughout the northern Nevada region.

Going into the second week of October, there's plenty of events around the capital city for this Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019 including a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered. There's also art showings, the grand opening of Carson City's Postal Annex, family movie night at the Carson City Library featuring "Muppets from Space," as well as Big Band jazz music with a fall theme at Living the Good Life and more. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Saludos Amigos" by artist Justin Favela at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The exhibition is in the gallery now through Jan. 29, 2020, at the Courthouse, 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The second-floor gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Carson City Symphony Association announces the fourth annual instrumental music scholarship for Carson City students age 5 to 17. The scholarship was established by a generous gift from Jennifer and John Webley in memory of Rosemary Nebesky, former board member and friend of the Carson City Symphony Association.

International Walk to School Day is being celebrated Wednesday around Carson City. The day is celebrated globally and involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, it has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration each October.

CARSON CITY — Improving student health and reducing student absenteeism are just two of the goals of Nevada Health Centers as they bring telehealth services to schools.

Fifth-grade Teacher Steven Vradenburg at Fremont Elementary School in Carson City was recently offered and selected, one of only 40 teachers in the country and the only teacher from the state of Nevada, to participate in a nationwide fellowship program from Empatico.

National Honor Society held its induction ceremony Sept. 23 in the CHS Big Gym featuring guest speaker Ryan Costella a 2000 CHS graduate. Costella was an active member of NHS, and this fact influenced his desire to attend college at Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA where he earned degrees in Political Science and English.
