Tickets Available for New York Themed New Years Eve Party

The public is invited to the 4th annual New York New Year’s Eve Party, hosted by The Friends of the Carson City Library and the Carson City Library Foundation. The event, which helps raise funds for the Carson City Library, will be held from 6 to 10 pm in the Carson Nugget Ballroom.

Tickets are $50 each, or $375 for a table for eight, and include a buffet dinner, no-host bar, dancing, and live and silent auctions. Guest will also enjoy a balloon drop, live streaming of the Times Square ball drop and a champagne toast at 9 pm.

Outdoors with Don Q: Why five adults were crying Monday and Tuesday

For the record, four adults (Chuck and Barbara Van Hise, plus Don and Elaine Quilici, all of Carson City) were crying at the Van Hise home on the afternoon of October 21. And, then the following afternoon, we would be joined by my son Jim, crying at his home.

Why was everyone crying on those two fateful days in late October?
Was it because someone had died? Nope.
Was it because someone had a serious illness? Nope.
Was it because someone had a serious injury? Nope.
Was it because there had been some bad news? Nope.

Reno public radio KUNR celebrates 50-year anniversary

The call letters KUNR first broke through the FM radio airwaves on Oct. 7, 1963 with a short 15-minute broadcast that reached listeners in a 13-mile radius. Today, KUNR 88.7 is an affiliate of National Public Radio that serves 45,000 weekly listeners in 20 communities in Northern Nevada and Northeastern California.

This year marks KUNR’s 50th year of public broadcasting on the University of Nevada, Reno’s campus. The station has become a staple in the community and continues to be a growing source of local and regional news.

Carson City weekend arrests include misdemeanor assault on officer, disorderly conduct

A 19-year-old Carson City man faces five misdemeanor charges including assaulting a police officer after he barricaded himself inside his father's bedroom, with the father asking officers to have his son removed.

The man was arrested at 9:20 p.m., Sept. 7 in the 900 block of Woodside Drive. According to arrest report, officers were in the area attempting to locate the man, a known gang member, following a fight earlier in which he fled from officers.

Tahoe Hockey Partners, LLC Brings WSHL Junior Hockey Team to South Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Hockey Partners, LLC announced today that newly formed Lake Tahoe Blue will play their inaugural Junior A hockey season at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena as part of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the Western States Hockey League (WSHL). League preseason games start September 20 and the regular season starts October 4.

Season and single game tickets will be available at the Ice Arena and online at www.tahoehockey.net on a date to be announced.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats Seek Western District Championship Repeat

There is no place like someone else’s home, at least for the Western Nevada College baseball team. Since March 23, the Wildcats have played 19 of 23 games on the road, compiling an 18-5 record.

That ability to focus and excel away from home will come in handy this weekend in Sterling, Colo., as the Wildcats pursue their second straight Western District Championship and a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series.

Kate McGee joins KUNR as Reno radio broadcast journalist

RENO, Nev. – Kate McGee has joined 88.7 FM KUNR – Reno Public Radio – as a broadcast journalist, coming to northern Nevada from the East Coast. She recently graduated from Fordham University in the Bronx, N.Y., with a dual bachelor's degree in American studies and history. She started her public radio career at Fordham’s WFUV Radio as a reporter, anchor and producer, where she covered everything from Mayor Mike Bloomberg to stickball tournaments.

School board to meet Tuesday

The Carson City School Board will meet at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. Williams St.

Several items will be on the agenda, including reports from the superintendent, a presentation regarding the American Citizen Essay Contest, a proclamation regarding National Parental Involvement Day, and a presentation of the district's new website.

Several issues about individual students and situations, including permission regarding home-schooled and charter school students to participate in athletics, will also be discussed.

Bighorns vs Gold Sox: Series tied at 1-1

The Nevada Bighorns will be taking on the Marysville Gold Sox at 7pm tonight. The 4 game weekend series is tied at 1 game apiece. The Bighorns won the first game on Friday night with late game heroics, 8-7. The Gold Sox came back last night shutting out the Bighorns 6-0.

Opening ceremonies, volunteer and chapter awards, banquet speakers and presentations, and other select Elk Camp attractions will be broadcast live from Reno, Nev., March 3-5, on the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) website.

The special Friends of the Foundation breakfast with Bob Eubanks also will broadcast live beginning at about 8:00 (PT) on March 4.

Sandoval Announces 5 Percent Pay Cut For State Employees Instead Of Furloughs

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval delivered the bad news in an email to state employees today: His budget will propose a 5 percent across-the-board salary reduction for state employees instead of continuing with a furlough program.
“We must also continue the suspension of merit pay and longevity pay,” he said in the letter.
