Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 07/24/2012 - 11:37amThe weather was hot, and so was the racing action at Fernley 95A Speedway last Saturday night. The Hobby Stock division led off, with Tom Haxall of Verdi taking the lead from pole and building a margin over Sun Valley’s Rick Miller and Jake Baker of Reno. Carl Barlow of Silver Springs, who won from the back of the field two weeks ago, wasted no time charging through the field to second place. Newcomer Haxall didn’t realize that the track rules call for racing back to the yellow, so when the first caution came out for two cars spinning in turn two, he lost the lead to Barlow.

Movie Reivew: '21 Jump Street' basic teen fare, but fun for all
Submitted by admin on Sun, 03/18/2012 - 2:03pmThe action-comedy film "21 Jump Street," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, may seem a little familiar to those who saw the teen comedy "Project X" recently. And for good reason, the writer for both films was Michael Bacall. There's much of the same in both films, high school affairs drugs and teen mammoth parties.
But don't let that spook you, as bad as "Project X" was, "21 Jump Street" is loud and funny and has two fine leads, Jonah Hill as Schmidt and Channing Tatum as Jenko. In high school Schmidt was the goofball and Jenko the football star.

Movie Review: 'Underworld Awakening' a waste of Beckinsale's talent
Submitted by admin on Sun, 01/22/2012 - 8:06amThe sci-fi-horror film "Underworld Awakened" screening at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City is the fourth iteration of the series, in this case starring Kate Beckinsale as Selene for the third time.
Selene hs been in suspended animation in a freezer for 12 years bust breaks out to find that humankind is at war with the vampires in the population a well as the werewolves.
Well, she isn't going to sit still for this and with super athleticism leaps off buildings and bumps of a bunch of cop-soldiers (hard to tell them apart but they all have machine guns).
Movie Review: 'Contraband' a so-so thriller with Mark Wahlberg as macho-in-chief
Submitted by admin on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 9:25amThe action-thriller "Contraband," now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, stars Mark Wahlberg as Chris Farraday, a reformed former ace smuggler living in New Orleans with with wife Kate (Kate Beckinsale) and two sons (largely ignored) making home burglar alarms as a business.

Movie Reivew: 'Immortals' won't live long in movie history
Submitted by admin on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 10:07amSometimes one wonders if casting calls in Hollywood consisted of the males baring pectorals and the women an ability to look good but not have to have any actings skills. And for directors to have a good visual sense but no idea of what a story it supposed to do.
That sentiment is triggered by the movie "Immortals," currently flickering at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City.

'Tower Heist' is a nice caper movie with Ben Stiller and a good old Eddie Murphy

Movie Review: 'The Three Musketeers' is swashbuckling and stars the bright Jovovich
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 10/23/2011 - 9:17am"The Three Musketeers," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is the umpteenth version of the Alexander Dumas Pere's novel. Like most of its predecessors, the best parts don't really fit together. Things are sort of pasted into a film with its bright spots and plodding moments.
D'Artagnan is a country youth out to join the famed three musketeers in the France of Louis XIII. He finds them by accidentally challenging them to duels on the same day. Somehow he works it out.
Movie Review: 'Ides of March' a fine Clooney-Gosling political film
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 10/10/2011 - 8:00am"The Ides of March," currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is a welcome change from the summer fare of bare-chested shoot 'em ups. It's a serious film about American politics with a fine cast headed by Ryan Gosling as Stephen Myers, a sleazy press secretary to George Clooney's Mike Morris, seeking the Democratic nomination for president at a hotly contested Ohio vote.
Clooney is almost just a supporting actor but even in his shorter screen time manages to impress. He also directs, produces and co-writes the script, which is tight and intelligent.
Movie Review: Brad Pitt may not hit a homer in 'Moneyball,' but at least it is a triple
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 5:27pmThe baseball-computer film "Moneyball" now playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is the story of how computer analysis came to baseball through the then lowly Oakland A's. Enright, Aces roll to victory 4-2 over RiverCats; lead series 2-0
Submitted by Chris Graham on Thu, 09/08/2011 - 9:37pmRENO- It was all about the Aces starter RHP Barry Enright who made sure that the Sacramento RiverCats' bats would be silenced in Game 2 at Aces Ballpark Thursday night in the best-of-five series.
Enright threw masterfully for Reno going 6.2 innings giving up 1 run on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk. The only blemish for Barry was a Chris Carter solo home run in the 6th inning and that was all the RiverCats would be able to muster up against Enright offensively.
Movie Review: 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' nothing to be afraid of
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 08/28/2011 - 10:21amThe horror film "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," currently screening at the Fanango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City and elsewhere in the Tahoe area, stars Bailee Madison as Sally Hirst. She's about 10 or 12, is a bit chubby and has a mean way of not listening to her father Alex Hirst (Guy Pearce) or his wife Kimberly (Katie Holmes).
Movie Review: 'Conan the Barbarian' flashes swords and other ideas
Submitted by admin on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 9:32am"Conan the Barbarian" is currently wielding swords and other death weapons at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City.
And no, if you thought this was a re-release of the Arnold Schwarzenegger film of the 1980s, it's not. It a new bloody, murderous revival of the franchise but since Arnold isn't up to murder and mayhem these days we have a new Conan, two of them actually, one in his teens and the other the Conan out on a bloody roll.
