The Cooperative Extension and 4-H Office held its first ever Youth Summer Day Camp. Lindsay Chichester, Extension Educator says, “We have actively been working on creating awareness about 4-H and Extension, and what we can provide to both youth and adults in our community.

Living in the dusty, dry high desert means that we escape cancerous car rot. Additionally, it’s probably the reason that Northern Nevada is a mecca for classic cars and the shows that celebrate them. The Silver Dollar Classic Car Show has long been Carson’s kick off to the hot, melty August nights that follow – the Max Casino is where it all begins. Head to Red’s Old 395 for an appreciation party to those who fight our wild fires and say a hello to Smokey the Bear. Trey Stone makes an appearance at Living the Good Life and Whiskey Tavern welcomes you to their karaoke stage.

Did you miss the Community Art Night last month? Never fear, Artsy Fartsy and the Charlie B Art Galleries are teaming up again for a night of art, food trucks, and more in Telegraph Square downtown. Dress as your favorite superhero for Gardnerville’s Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk. Enjoy ice cream and a concert by the Capital City Community Band at the First United Methodist Church on Musser St. Close out the evening with karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Enjoy a guided tour of starry wonders with professional stargazer Gigi Giles. Delight in a unique and educational experience as you peer through high powered telescopes and astronomical binoculars in the fresh mountain air. Spooner Lake’s limited light pollution provides exceptional views of the night sky. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight.

WHERE: Spooner Lake State Park, just north of Highway 50 on State Route 28.

COST: Event is free, and park entry fees will be waived.

The Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club presents the 14th Annual Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs. Carson City plays host as the event headquarters. Runners packets are being distributed today, Friday, in the legislative mall.

This three day event with over 550 participants and at least as many volunteers, began in 2001 as a 50 Mile and 50 Kilometer Endurance Run. The 100 Mile event was added in 2006 and is an internationally recognized Ultra Event.

There’s a riot at Mills Park. Don’t worry, this isn’t the kind of riot you want to avoid: the Rockabilly Riot has roared into town and offers rad cars, drag races, live music, a burlesque show and tattoo expo. Intermingled with the pompadours and pin-up girls are hundreds of law enforcement officers in town to show off their skills at the Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. Tonight you’ll have to choose where you go for free music: the street dance at Jimmy G’s, Gold Dust West, Westside Pour House, the Fandango, Nugget, or Max Casino.

Meet at Highway 50 park n Ride to carpool to Spooner Lake. WATER & STURDY BOOTS OR ATHELTIC SHOES REQUIRED. Suggest lunch, hat, and sunscreen.

A different hike every month. Hikes are 7+ miles, usually with 500+ feet of elevation gain, of 4 hours or more duration.. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and leader may request physician’s release if needed. Three days of thrill-seeking, mountain biking adventure and plenty of capital city hospitality and entertainment will kick off the inaugural Carson City Off-Road Epic Ride series beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend.

Hello fellow anglers. We have had two successful kids fishing derbys in our area. The Lampe Park Kids Derby had 1,300 children attend this year and last Saturday was the Alpine County Kids Fishing derby at Indian Creek.

My hat is off to all the volunteers that came together to make this such a successful and fun event. Now it is time for the kids to take dad fishing. Father's Day is this Sunday and what better way to give back than to take your dad fishing. These events are the reason that most kids get hooked on fishing.

Let’s go to the Fair, Carson City. Mills Park is hopping with activity: a carnival, car show, exhibits, music, and a return of the Rendezvous. If you have kids, don’t miss this month’s Young Eagle Flights at the Carson Airport, just make sure to sign up by 8 a.m. Start your day at the Third and Curry Farmers Market, and don’t forget to make your artistic mark on a handcrafted bowl for the Empty Bowls event. Meet at the Park n Ride on Highway 50 at 8:00am to carpool up to Spooner.

Always bring water, a hat and use sunscreen. Bring a friend or friendly dogs, both of whom also need water! Recommend buying some hiking poles or any type of adjustable poles for use on the uphill trails.

These hikes will be 2-4 miles in distance with flat and/or uphill hiking on sandy or dirt paths. We measure by time hiked rather than distance so that we are hiking about 90 minutes round-trip.

Thursday is something to celebrate. The long-awaited Nevada State Fair kicks off in Mills Park with a ribbon cutting by Governor Sandoval. Grab the kids, your friends, and family and enjoy carnival rides, county exhibits, civil war reenactments and much more. Our neighbors to the south are celebrating, too: the 106th Annual Carson Valley Days is this weekend. If you’re looking for something quieter, the lecture on the Civil War at the Gold Hill Hotel or an author’s talk on the Ghost Railroads of Central Nevada at the Nevada State Railroad Museum might be a better bet.

Hello fellow anglers, well the big kids have had there opening fishing day. Now it is time to the little kids to shine. On June 3-4, the 27th annual Lampe Park Free Kids Fishing derby will kick off the season for 2016. This event is open to all kids ages 3 through 12.

Weather permitting, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service plan to continue prescribed fire operations this week with some smoke visible from the valley.
On the East Shore, operations may take place near Spooner Summit, Camp Galilee and on Kingsbury Grade near Edgewood Drive.

Organizers of Carson City's first Epic Rides Off-Road mountain bike event in June unveiled its event course Tuesday through a video and a series of maps. The event, June 17-19, will gives riders three distance options: beginner, weekend warrior and pro level.

The riding courses were picked in cooperation with Visit Carson City, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and Nevada State Parks.

For the first time in four years, Spooner Lake State park is home to a system of meandering cross-country ski trails that wind through dense forest, across an open meadow and along the banks of Spooner Lake.

North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue widespread prescribed fire operations around the Lake Tahoe Basin over the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Last weekend HOSA members, also known as Future Health Professionals, volunteered at the RAM medical event held at Carson High School. HOSA students served as interpreters, place holders, registration assistants, dental scribes, and vision care assistants.

The students were able to put the skills that they learn in class to use. They also gained valuable experience by working alongside dentists, doctors, nurses, and optometrists. The RAM event served more than 900 people in the Carson City area.

1:22 a.m. on September 23 in Carson City was the official start of the Fall season, and with the arrival of that special season of the year that lasts until December 21 (the beginning of the Winter season), there are all kinds of activities occurring that might be of interest to you.

California fishing seasons closing:
If you like to fish in the State of California, be advised that many of its creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs will be closing on Nov. 15, and will not re-open until the last Saturday in April 2016.

Do you like shopping, Carson City? Check out the Vintage Fair at Du Sorrella downtown. The last Farmers Market of the season is at Third and Curry, so get your fix of fresh fruits, veggies, honey and more before the leaves fall. Wild Horse Children’s Theater is hosting a huge Warehouse and Multi-family sale; if you need a Halloween costume, you won’t want to miss it. The Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the Autumn Earth Spirit Faire with vendors, workshops, and more.

Ready, set, GO! Whether you want to watch camels race, or hot air balloons light up the sky, this is a great weekend in Northern Nevada. If cool cars are more your style, join the Freaks of Nature Car Club at a show and shine in the parking lot of Yogurt Beach in North Carson. It’s root, root, root for the home team as the WNC Wildcats play a double header at Harvey Field.

Permits for firewood will go on sale Saturday, Sept. 12, with approximately 150 permits available on a first-come, first-served basis. The wood consists of a mixture of pine and fir, some seasoned and some green.

The permit sale starts at 7 a.m. on the 1st floor of the Richard H. Bryan state office building, located at 901 South Stewart Street in Carson City. Permits are $65 per cord – cash or check only – limit one cord per address/family. The sale will close when all permits have been sold.

The kids are finishing their first week of school, but the summer hasn’t quit just yet. The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival is heading into its final weekend, and as always, going out in style. Tonight, celebrate Count Basie’s 111th birthday with the Mile High Jazz Band downtown on Third Street. Carson Tahoe Medical Center is holding its 5th annual HopeFest concert headlined by the Young Dubliners. Carson's own, Molly Seals, will be performing, as well.

What a crazy week in the Sierras! Afternoon thunderstorms for the last several days, flooding, hail, and even snow in Yosemite are definitely unusual for this time of year. The storms are expected to subside this weekend, so keep your fingers crossed for some sunshine. Break a leg to the Proscenium Players as they open Murder in an English Manor at the Brewery Arts Center. Senior Follies debuts this year’s performance, Flashback, at the Community Center.

This time last year, Lake Tahoe made headlines around the world for an embarrassing amount of trash left on the beaches after the Fourth of July festivities. To prevent that from happening again, the community is rolling out a secret weapon: a humorous new campaign that aims to remind folks to take care of the region.

Bikes, and cars, and brews: oh my! Downtown Carson is awash in activity on Saturday. Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly features the Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, vendors, a brewfest, moustache competition and more. The Karson Kruzers are hosting their annual car show at Fuji Park, but will be making their way downtown after it’s over, so there will be plenty of cool cars to admire. Mojo Green takes the stage at 7 p.m. and you can head into the Carson Cigar Company to enjoy Reno’s newest Pink Floyd Tribute Band, Scarlett Moon at 9 p.m.
