Ski with a Forest Service ranger tradition begins Friday at Heavenly

Beginning this Friday and continuing through April, the public is invited to spend a day at Lake Tahoe skiing with a U.S. Forest Service ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Tours begin at the top of the gondola at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Monday and Friday through winter. Spanish Ski with a Ranger returns Friday, Feb. 20, with tours offered every Friday at 10:30 a.m. Both programs last about an hour and continue through April 10, 2015, weather permitting.

More trails, terrain open at Northstar, halfpipe slated for Friday

Lake Tahoe's Northstar California will open this winter’s first halfpipe to skiers and riders this coming Friday, Jan. 9, resort officials announced Tuesday.

Located on Pipeline trail and accessible via Vista Express, the halfpipe is a popular and highly-anticipated feature among Northstar’s terrain park users. Its addition allows for a contiguous, uninterrupted terrain park descent from the top of Pinball Park, which currently offers guests access to 46 features, into the Pipeline Park, which hosts the halfpipe.

Heavenly at Lake Tahoe opens Olympic Express

Access to more terrain opened up to skiers and snowboarders Friday at Lake Tahoe. Heavenly Mountain Resort opened Olympic Express, offering guests access to upper Olympic Downhill run. The resort is currently operating 18 lifts, accessing 25 trails, and has three access points to the mountain open, including the Heavenly Gondola at Heavenly Village, Stagecoach Lodge in Nevada, and California Lodge off of Ski Run Blvd.

Heavenly, Northstar expand terrain for Thanksgiving holiday weekend

Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar California Resort will expand terrain for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, officials announced Wednesday.

Heavenly will open Orion on Thursday, an intermediate run accessed off Dipper Express, boosting the open terrain to 2.3 skiable miles. During the holiday weekend, beginning on Thursday, Heavenly will open daily at 8:30 a.m. Heavenly will also provide the tubing hill as additional beginner terrain.

Lake Tahoe man who spent time skiing while drawing disability benefits sentenced for workers' compensation fraud

A 60-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was sentenced to a year in prison Tuesday and ordered to pay $160,000 in restitution for making false statements to obtain workers' compensation benefits, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

Mark E. Leung, 60, worked for the United States Postal Service until 1987 when he claimed he sustained a work-related injury. Leung never returned to full-time employment with the Postal Service and began receiving workers’ compensation benefits in 1987, according to the Justice Department.

Reno to London nonstop flights to begin in December 2015

Northern Nevada's first non-stop flight service between Reno and London’s Gatwick Airport will begin in December 2015, Reno-Tahoe International Airport officials announced Tuesday.

In partnership with Ski Lake Tahoe and the gaming community, the airport will offer twice-a-week service between Reno-Tahoe and London, England on Thomas Cook Airlines.

Forest Service seeks input on snowcat operations at Homewood

The Forest Service is seeking public input on a proposal submitted by Homewood Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe to offer guided snowcat skiing and snowboarding tours in the Ellis Peak are during winter 2014-2015.

The proposed area of operation is identified in the current Lake Tahoe Basin Management Snowmobile Guide as open for motorized use. The resort hopes to provide six to eight trips per day, three days per week depending on weather and snow conditions.

Tahoe South tunes up for winter with epic $100 million resort-to-recreation renaissance

Sierra Resort at Lake Tahoe to open Friday

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort will open Friday for the 2013-14 season with early season conditions and very limited terrain. Sierra Resort will run the Easy Rider Express chairlift accessing the skiers and snowboarders right half of Broadway trail.

This is a green run and will have small to medium rail features, giving guests a chance to get their park legs back underneath them. Forecasts show possible snow showers throughout the weekend and into next week for Lake Tahoe, potentially allowing Sierra Resort to open more trails conditions pending.

Warm weather to continue through weekend, Tuesday to bring blast of cold and snow

Enjoy the sunny, warm weather this weekend because a cool and downright cold change is on the way by late Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Light winds with above average temperatures are expected through the holiday weekend, making for ideal conditions to bike and hike around Carson City, visit Virginia City or head to Lake Tahoe for skiing.

Sorensens Resort property witnessed Snowshoe's passage many times as he carried mail through winter snow to deliver it to the other side of the Sierra Nevada on skis. He was the pioneer who introduced Nordic skiing to the West, if not the entire U.S.
