Chautauqua of Hiram D. Scott at Dangberg Historic Park

The final Chautauqua of the 2019 Festival season will portray Hiram D. Scott, Alpine County, California pioneer, on Sunday, September 22, at 10:00 am.

Hiram Daniel Scott was a ship builder from Pittston, Maine by trade. Initially he settled in Santa Cruz, California in 1847, then followed the Gold Rush when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill. There he operated a ferry business across the San Joaquin River.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — There will be a free event called “Remembering American Flat” this Saturday on the Comstock. The event includes three parts – a screening of a new documentary that covers the history of the American Flat mill from its inception in the 1920s to its demolition in 2014; a short lecture about the unique qualities of the mill by consulting architectural historian and industrial archaeologist Ron Reno, PhD; and a pop-up show with locals’ rare photos of the site.

Comstock Foundation hosts October history lecture series

The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture is launching the Comstock History Lecture Series, which includes seven themed lectures that focus on Comstock History. The location of the lectures will rotate around the communities of the Comstock: Dayton, Silver City, Gold Hill and Virginia City. Tickets to attend the lectures vary between $5 and $10, and light refreshments will be provided for a donation.

Silver Springs Tops List of Best Nevada Home Buying Opportunities

Lyon County, Nevada was the fastest-growing county in the United States prior to the 2008 economic collapse took one of the biggest hits statewide in the foreclosure crisis. The state overall was one of the hardest hit nationally and the housing market is still in recovery.
A glimmer of hope was seen in 2013, as home values headed up while foreclosure rates headed down, according to a report from the Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

Banjo music, gold and silver mining camp lore visited at free Carson City concert program

Step back in time for a night of music that graced mining camps for decades during the gold and silver rushes of the 1850s through the 1870s. The Gold Rush Banjo will be presented free on Friday, Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Seating is first come first serve. The program is an evening of stories and songs on the historical mid-19th century banjo with musician and historian Chris Bayer.

C-SPAN programs featuring Carson City to air this weekend

Carson City will be featured on the C-SPAN network's two channels this weekend after their visit to the capital city earlier this month.

In addition to having feature stories sprinkled in throughout the weekend on the respective networks, both American History TV and Book TV, there will be a block of programming where all of the respective Carson City pieces for their networks will air, said C-SPAN spokeswoman Laura Finch.
