Senator Square: Carson High School Culinary Arts program receives national recognition

Carson High School Culinary Arts has been named to the 2014-15 Elite 50 by the National Center for Hospitality Studies by the Sullivan University. The award recognizes an exclusive group of high schools that excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts.

Carson High School student raises more than $1,000 for local cancer patients

Kimberly Parsons, a Carson High School senior and dedicated member of the Key Club, organized and implemented a fundraising campaign for area cancer patients as her senior project. In doing so, Parsons sold cancer awareness themed t-shirts, wristbands, and baked goods throughout the campaign, raising a total of $1,245.

Parsons presented a check to the Carson Tahoe Health Foundation in Carson City on Tuesday, generously donating proceeds to benefit area cancer patient support which is then distributed through the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center.

Happy Friday, Carson City! I am once again pleased to bring you the event list that is featured on my Facebook page, I love Carson City. I follow the pages of local businesses and organizations, search website calendars, and compile a list of anything and everything going on in this community weekly. Some of it is family friendly, some is just for adults, but all of it is nearby.

Senator Square: CHS Marching Band wins Nevada Day Battle of the Bands

The CHS Marching Band competed last weekend in the Nevada Day Battle of the Bands held at Spanish Springs High School. The band finished first in their division beating out rivals Douglas High School.

They received the caption for "Outstanding Music." This award marks the first time in nine years that the marching band took home a first place trophy in a field show competition. Way to Go Big Blue Thunder!

Senator Square: Carson High senior Caden Lehman wins national rodeo event

Caden Lehman, a senior at Carson High School, an officer for the Capitol FFA program, and an officer in the Douglas-Carson High School Rodeo Club, recently had his biggest win doing what he loves. He is involved in Team Roping and Calf Roping and is a member of the American Cowboys Team Roping Association. 

Recently at the ACTRA National Finals in Reno at the Livestock Events Center, Caden won the Super 7 National Championship, landing him and his partner, Jack Curry of Gardnerville, each new Royal T 3-horse trailers, buckles, and $10,000 cash. 

NDOT refines Carson City Freeway design after public feedback

The Nevada Department of Transportation is refining design of a key element of the upcoming Phase 2B3 of Carson City Freeway construction to include a free right turn lane between southbound Carson Street and westbound U.S. 50 to Lake Tahoe.

Original design for the last leg of the freeway called for southbound Carson Street traffic to stop at the traffic signal located at the Carson Street/U.S 50 Spooner junction before making a right turn to Lake Tahoe.

Carson Hosts Annual Senior Parent Night

Carson High School hosted the annual Senior Parent Night this week. The annual event is brought on thanks to the wonderful guidance counselors in the guidance department of Carson High School.

The purpose of the night is to better ensure parents that their senior child or children are on the right track to graduate high school and to better prepare the parents for the endeavors and expenses that come along with being a senior.

Senator Square: Car wash and rummage sale fundraisers this week plus senior in the spotlight

This Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Carson High School Health Occupations Students of America members will host car wash and rummage sale in the U at the front of the school. Pre-sale car wash tickets are $3 and can be purchased from any HOSA student. The cost will go up to $5 the day of the car wash. All proceeds go to help send HOSA students to State and National conferences to compete and represent Carson City.

Women to Women with Rebecca Ortiz

This week's Women to Women features Rebecca Ortiz, an 18-year-old Carson High School graduate. Rebecca plans on attending University of Nevada, Reno for premedical studies this September.

She is the youngest woman ever to be interviewed on Women to Women, but it is the encompassing aspect of her senior high graduation project that brought her into local and statewide attention.

Carson High grad James Bridegum caps academic career at UNR with 2014 Herz Gold Medal

The University of Nevada, Reno named James Bridegum the recipient of the 2014 Herz Gold Medal for outstanding scholarship. The Herz Gold Medal is presented each year during the Spring Commencement ceremony to the graduating senior with the highest grade-point average.

Bridegum, a native Nevadan and graduate of Carson High School in Carson City, graduates from the University Friday, May 16, with a bachelor’s of science degree in computer science and engineering with a minor in mathematics. He earned a 4.0 grade-point average.

Carson High student takes her senior project to the highest power

For her senior project, Carson High School student Becky Ortiz asked for a higher power to guide her. She and more than 150 fellow students, siblings, parents and grandparents found their way to the commons area in front of Nevada's highest court Saturday to reach for that power.

Concert for the Critter

Carson High School senior, Chrislynn will be performing a benefit concert featuring her vocal and instrumental talents as part of her senior project. Proceeds from the event will benefit CASI, Carson Animal Services Initiative. Enjoy an evening of entrainment while supporting a great cause and have a chance to win raffle prizes too.

FREE Women's Self Defense Seminar

For her senior project Carson High School Senior Emily Eiswert will be holding a FREE self defense seminar on Saturday March 22, 2014 from 10 am to noon.

This class is open to women ages 10 and up. Girls between 10-17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or have a signed release form on file at Carson ATA.

Governor’s Office of Energy partners to bring free power to Carson City electric vehicles

Drivers of electric vehicles now have a free charging station at the Carson City Community Center, thanks to a partnership between the Governor’s Office of Energy, NV Energy and Carson City Public Works.

The newly-installed electric vehicle charging station can be found at Carson City’s Mills Park, in the parking lot between the Community Center and Aquatics Center.

Mock Teen Party to raise awareness about dangers facing teens

Carson senior goes extreme with coupons; collects items for local veterans

A senior project for a Carson City high school student that involved "extreme couponing" for two months netted more than $1,100 worth of goods that he donated to area veterans.

Dallas Burnett, a Carson High School senior, managed to find, clip, cut, and ultimately save $818.56 in grocery and household items that he donated to the Veterans Guest House in Reno.

Documentary screening, discussion on water issues featured in Carson City

A screening of the public television documentary "Liquid Assets: The Story of Our Water Infrastructure" will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday May, 20 in the Carson City Library Auditorium, 900 N. Roop St, Carson City. The event will be hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers – Capital Branch.

The screening will be followed by a community discussion with Mark Brethauer P.E., a Senior Project Manager with Carson City Public Works. The event is free and open to the public.
