Governor’s Office of Energy partners to bring free power to Carson City electric vehicles

Drivers of electric vehicles now have a free charging station at the Carson City Community Center, thanks to a partnership between the Governor’s Office of Energy, NV Energy and Carson City Public Works.
The newly-installed electric vehicle charging station can be found at Carson City’s Mills Park, in the parking lot between the Community Center and Aquatics Center. It was funded from GOE’s State Energy Program formula grant and a shared investment program from NV Energy. CC Public Works provided labor to build and Carson City will free power to consumers for the next five years.
“The car charging station is a convenient outlet for local drivers,” said Paul Thomsen, GOE Director, and himself the owner of an electric vehicle. “Drivers can plug in and visit Mills Park, the library, community center or aquatics center, and then return to a charged vehicle free of charge.”
GOE funding came out of its SEP formula grant, which is an annual source of federal funds from the Department of Energy (DOE). The grant’s goals are to improve the reliability and affordability of energy supplies available to Nevada’s residents and businesses consistent with the need to protect the state’s environment and human health.
“Carson City was pleased to partner with the Governor’s Office of Energy and NV Energy to provide this facility in order to make greener transportation options more available and convenient in Carson City,” said Tom Grundy, Senior Project Manager for Carson City Public Works. “This project also fits well with the City’s Strategic Plan which promotes a clean and healthy environment.”
Carson City provided labor on the project for site design, work on site as well as project and construction management. The station is the first on public land in Carson City. EV drivers now have two capital city locations to charge up at, the other being the station located at the NV Energy office at 875 Long Street.
The GOE decision to help fund the car charger and partner with NV Energy and Carson City highlights the office’s ability to facilitate cooperation among stakeholders, lead initiatives to stimulate economic development, and attract energy-related business ventures that include site development, generation and production, and inter/intrastate transmission.
The Governor’s Office of Energy oversees energy programs required through statute and those that help to meet the mission of the office, which is to ensure the wise development of Nevada’s energy resources in harmony with local community economic needs and Nevada natural resources.
