Pursuing an education in nursing has taken Diana Meza Cabrera on a lengthy road of challenges, experiences and rewards.

Since graduating from high school in 2006, Meza Cabrera consistently found ways to help others. As an outreach educator for the Live Violence Free program in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., she has assisted domestic violence, child abuse and sexual abuse victims. She also been a student assistant at the Humboldt State University Health Center, and has participated in blood and toothbrush drives while attending WNC.

William Dakota Gershel and Timothy Ibarra, both seniors at Carson High School, have participated in Career and Technical Education programs since attending CHS as freshman. Ibarra participated in two years of auto technician courses and two years in auto body courses. Gershel experimented in a variety of CTE courses including culinary, web design and welding.

Wendy Calvin has been working on Mars for 12 years. She is the Science Operations Working Group Chair on a team that has been exploring the Martian landscape with the rover Opportunity.

On Tuesday night at the annual Jalé and Warren Trepp Business Plan Competition, three teams of young entrepreneurs studying at Sierra Nevada College competed for $6,000 in cash prizes.

This event is one of the most exciting celebrations of the academic year at SNC Tahoe. After each team presented twenty-minute oral presentations to a panel of live, external judges and a public audience of more than 100 people, the room waited in anticipation for the announcement of the winners.

Carson High School Career and Technical Education agriculture program lead teacher, Charlie Mann, donned his dress, braided his beard and welcomed his Agriculture 1 students to the Hunger Games.

The Carson City students have been studying world hunger, commodities, production and trade throughout the semester, and the Hunger Games simulation gave them an opportunity to examine trade and barter with their peers while relating to popular culture.

Western Nevada College has received a $142,000 STEM Workforce Challenge Grant to enhance its welding certificate and degree programs. The programs help meet the needs of the region’s advanced manufacturers. 

The grant will allow purchase of a robotic welder and associated curriculum. WNC will use college resources to upgrade its facilities to accommodate the new program. 

Western Nevada College has named 312 students to the Fall 2015 Dean’s List. For consideration to WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher. Honorees are:

Enjoy the Monday Night Music Series at Sierra Place Senior Living on West College Parkway. Sandi ‘Pipes’ Medley will be singing some jazz favorites.

Ten years ago, a group of teachers started a little club at CHS for staff called Senator Pride. One of our projects was to expand the news to our community of all the great things happening at Carson High School.

DILLON, Mont., Jan. 5, 2016 – The University of Montana Western in Dillon, Mont., named three students to the 2015 Fall Semester Dean’s List.

Rebecca Connet from Dayton, Nev., Alyssa Haugen from Fallon, Nev., and Madeline Hull-Taylor from Yerington, Nev., received Dean’s Lists honors.

Alum Presents Refugee information
CHS alum, Kaitlin Brush (class of 2004), presented to social studies classes this past month. Her informational presentation focused on the definition of refugees, migrants, and internally displaced persons, and the current refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe and how different European countries are working to address the growing number of refugees.

Caroline Gabica slid activated hand warmers into her boots, picked up a bag of footballs and followed the coach out onto the field during the playoff game between Carson and Reed high schools in November. Soon Gabica, manager for the Carson High School Senators football team, was back on the sidelines, taping up the injured fingers of a player who got tangled up with another player’s face mask.

CHS competed at the Spanish Springs tournament last weekend for speech and debate. Twenty-one Carson High debaters competed on Friday and 16 students competed Saturday. Several students brought home top honors at this tournament which had roughly 470 entries. Competing in senior level debate for the first time Evan Cherpeski took tenth place in Public Forum speaking point.

In addition to the Section 529 Plans to save money for college education costs, there is the Uniform Transfers to Minors Act, also known as Uniform Gifts to Minors Act. Especially for younger children, the Uniform Gifts to Minors Act can be a way to shift income from parent's high tax bracket (rate) to the child's low or no tax bracket.

More than 125 students were awarded over $150,000 across 90 different scholarships at the Western Nevada College Foundation 16th Annual Scholarship Appreciation and Recognition reception in Carson City. Student award recipients and their families and scholarship donors filled the Carson Nugget ballroom Friday, Oct. 16.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Bunny Ranch owner and star of HBO's Cathouse series Dennis Hof has announced that his Nevada brothel will begin offering college students a unique and rapid way to pay off their student loans. The program, open to all coeds of accredited two and four year universities, promises to match any payment made by the young woman towards her student loans up to the amount she earns as a legal prostitute at The Bunny Ranch over a 60 day period.

The University of Nevada, Reno welcomed 20,898 undergraduate and graduate students to campus for the fall 2015 semester, representing a 4.8 percent increase over the fall 2014 enrollment of 19,934 students.

Undergraduate student enrollment increased 5.9 percent this year, from 16,330 in fall 2014 to 17,295 in 2015. Graduate student enrollment increased 1 percent, from last year’s 2,820 students to 2,851 in 2015.

Western Nevada College has named 50 students to the Summer 2015 Dean’s List. To qualify for WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least six units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

The Associated Students of Western Nevada College is making sure the fall semester opens with some pizzazz. WNC students at WNC's Carson City and Fallon campuses can expect plenty of free food, games and entertainment beginning Monday, Aug. 31.

Carson City Library will host Valeri Wilson, currently a student at the University of Nevada, Reno, on Wednesday, September 2, at 6:30 pm for a presentation on the country of Turkey. Wilson studied at the Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey.

As a student in her final semester at UNR she is studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and psychology. While in Turkey she was able to study the sociology and culture of the country and its people. Join us to learn more about the diverse culture of the Turkish nation.

Professional golfer Roy McAvoy is on the 18th fairway in the final round of the U.S. Open, trying to clear the ominous water hazard separating him from the green.
His first ball falls well short of the green, splashing into the water. So does the second. The third. And the fourth shot. All the while, the entire gallery, the players and even McAvoy’s caddy are gasping at the futility of his efforts.
But not Roy.

Hundreds of Northern Nevada high school students will receive a $300 Jump Start College scholarship for the spring 2016 semester at Western Nevada College campuses across the region, thanks to a donation from the William N. Pennington Foundation.

Peavine Hall, predicted to be the University’s first LEED Gold certified building, opened for a public viewing during its grand-opening ceremony Thursday and will open to students for fall 2015 semester Aug. 20.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Higher education officials say they'll be awarding a new need-based scholarship to 689 Nevada students in time for the fall semester.

Learn about the universe, the origin and development of humans on Earth, and the possibility of life on other planets, in two Western Nevada College astronomy classes offered his fall. Planetary Astronomy and Introduction to Astrobiology will offer the opportunity to learn from a scientist with ties to space industry.

Northern Nevada’s new manufacturing growth requires employees with more skills in applied technologies. Western Nevada College offers a new credential this fall that will help area residents meet their job goals. Courses beginning Monday, August 31, can lead to a Manufacturing Technician 1 credential.

Western Nevada College has received a grant to purchase Department of Labor approved equipment, course development, grant management staff assistance to students and program support for the College’s newly expanded Applied Industrial Technology program.

The mission of Leadership Academy of Nevada (LANV) is to prepare students to become principled leaders. Each semester students study and learn leadership skills and at the end of the year put the learned skills into practice through a three-week Leadership Block. An essential characteristic of a principled leader is providing service and all students are required to give at least two hours of service to their community.
