Welcome back activities slated for Western Nevada College students
The Associated Students of Western Nevada College is making sure the fall semester opens with some pizzazz. WNC students at WNC's Carson City and Fallon campuses can expect plenty of free food, games and entertainment beginning Monday, Aug. 31.
“We want to welcome new and returning students back to campus with a bang, giving them a preview of what is to come in the academic year 2015-16,” said ASWN Vice President Cheyenne Bryant. “The Associated Students of Western Nevada is here to serve them by striving to give them the college experience.“
At the Carson City campus, ASWN, WNC’s student governing body, has arranged for free donuts and coffee from 9 to 11 a.m. On Aug. 31 in the Bristlecone Building lobby and on the second floor of the Cedar Building. When students finish their first day of classes, they can enjoy free pizza and music from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Dini Student Center lobby.
If a student prefers a short-term tattoo, then Tuesday, Sept. 1 is your chance to add some art to your skin. Free Sharpie tattoos are planned from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Dini Student Center.
The fun continues on Wednesday, Sept. 2 with a free barbecue and games from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Dini Student Center.
The festive week concludes with a hypnosis show featuring Dan Kimm at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Marlette Hall. The show is open to the community. Tickets are $3 with a student ID and $5 without. Children 12 and under will be admitted for free.
ASWN is also trying to arrange for food trucks to be on campus Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and an Italian ice truck on Wednesday.
On the Fallon campus, students can celebrate the opening day of classes on Aug. 31, with free donuts and coffee from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Piñon Hall lobby.
A larger party is planned for Thursday Sept. 10. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., students can enjoy a free barbecue, music, face painting and games between Virgil Getto and Piñon halls.
Bryant cited an article written by Alexander Astin in 1993 about the positive effects of engaging students in on-campus activities.
“Extracurricular activities provide a setting to become involved and to interact with other students, thus leading to increased learning and enhanced development,” Astin wrote.
Bryant said ASWN’s goal is to keep students on campus longer.
“ASWN aspires to bring more life into campus by giving students a reason to remain on campus rather than coming and going for their classes,” she said.
