Finally, Nevada Day weekend is here. State offices are closed, the kids are off school, and Carson City is hoppin’. Join the Downtown Business Association for the ‘Passport to Downtown’ with live music, a raffle, craft and vendor show, and a family fun center, complete with petting zoo. Stick around for the annual fall Blinky Man Costumed Nighttime Bike Ride Pub Crawl with Lights. Halloween festivities, a carnival in Mills Park, and opening night of the La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow are on today’s list, as well.

It’s that time again. The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Also new this year is the one-night-only curated art show, Capital Collage, on Friday night featuring over 20 diverse artists and organizations.

Downtown Carson City businesses will once again open their doors for the second annual Passport to Downtown on Friday.

Tricks, treats, and fun for all ages is what Halloween is about. You’ll find numerous reasons to don a costume in this year’s list of everything Halloween. Parties for the adult crowd, haunted houses, and trick or treating are just the tip of the broomstick. Everything is listed chronologically by start time. If it is located outside of Carson City, I’ve put the name of the town in bold face.

Dozens of spectators and participants released balloons Saturday morning on Bob McFadden Plaza in downtown Carson City to recognize a loved one lost to suicide.

With all the motorcycles on the road, you may be looking for some peace and quiet. Luckily, it’s fee-free day at all of the Nevada State Parks. Load up the kids, pack a picnic, at head to the great outdoors. Don’t miss out on the last-of-the-season Farmers Market at Third and Curry, stock up on local honey and load your basket with yummy stuff. Oktoberfest takes over the McFadden Plaza at 3 p.m. Bavarian and German beers, authentic food, and live music await. Keep reading for everything the area has to offer.

One might think that the end of summer means that the fun times are over: they would be wrong. This list of happenings in the Carson City area isn’t getting any shorter. The annual Genoa Candy Dance is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, and this weekend welcomes the first ever Silver State Arts Festival at Fuji Park, as well. The first ever Community Garage Sale at the Community Center offers one-stop bargain hunting. Swing into the season at the monthly dance party hosted by the High Sierra Swing Dance Club.

Enjoy these September days, it will be blustery and cold before we know it. Celebrate our neighbor to the east during their annual Dayton Valley Days street festival. Tour their museums, pan for gold, and enjoy samples at their Chili cook-off. Downtown Carson is a hotbed of fun tonight with two pub crawls and the Ghost Walk Haunted History Tour. Families from around the region converged on Mills Park in Carson City Saturday afternoon for the second annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day, a family-friendly venue featuring games, activities, music and food.

You’ll see some pretty interesting vehicles on the road these next few days, as travelers from all over head to Burning Man. If you aren’t off to the Playa yourself, there will be plenty of fun around town to keep you and your family occupied. The second annual Family Fun Day in Mills Park is your best bet for kids of all ages. This week’s free concert at Brewery Arts Center features the Dusty Green Bones. Don’t forget your dancing shoes; they’re sure to keep you on your feet.

Make this weekend something special. School starts up on Monday and it will be Halloween before we blink an eye. The Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival at Battle Born Harley boasts a full day of live music, vendors, activities and family fun. Bowers Mansion plays host to the annual Bluegrass Festival – bring a picnic and enjoy. Downtown Carson City will see the first of three monthly Beer Crawls; if you get there early, head over to Remedy’s to witness their yearly Bloody Mary Competition. There is something for everyone this weekend, so keep reading and find your fun.

A group of Corgis from Northern Nevada got together Sunday for their second annual Corgi Tahoe Takeover. There were about 30 Corgis and their owners attending. It's far fewer from the Corgi-con meet-ups in Southern and Northern California, but just as much fun. We all met at the dog beach in Carnelian Bay.

The valley is alive with the sound of music: the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, to be specific. Just about everywhere you go, you’ll be treated to something to soothe the soul or get the toes tapping. Get the kids up early for the Young Eagle Flights at the Carson City Airport – they’re free, but you need to be on time for registration. The world’s longest inland paddleboard race is on tap as part of the second annual “Tahoe Vista Paddlefest” September 8–10, 2017. It’s the finale of the Tahoe Cup Paddle Racing Series wrapped with family-focused events, music, and many more health and wellness activities at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort in Tahoe Vista, Calif.

Entertainment. Stargazing. Silent auction. Dancing and so much more! All this to benefit local science and technology students pursuing their dreams. Attend the second annual Reach for the Stars Gala on Saturday, Aug. 12 at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

Food, drink, live music, rubbing elbows with friends and neighbors, and a new wine-tasting add-on make this one of the best parties of the year. The morning brings an unparalleled opportunity: you’ve got one chance to walk, run, or bike right down the middle of the freeway before the new bypass is open to vehicle traffic alone. Grab your favorite four-legged friend and head to Adele’s: Dining for Dog Town is a delicious way to help out this amazing rescue organization.

What are you in the mood for? The Third and Curry Farmers Market is always a great place to start off your weekend. Kids won’t mind getting up early for the Young Eagle airplane flights at the Carson City Airport – they are free of charge for kids 8 – 17, you just need to be on time for registration. The Annual Chili Cook-off returns to Glen Eagles this weekend; with live music, a craft fair, and lots of yummy stuff to eat, raising money for Honor Flight has never tasted so good. Let the good times roll, Carson City. Cars, chrome, choppers, and kruzers are in abundance. Run Whatcha Brung at Fuji Park is open to any and all cars that can get themselves there. The Rockabilly Riot and T Bucket Alliance at Mills Park is an American Graffiti flashback. Cheer on our local motorcycle cops at the Extreme Motor Challenge, or hop on your own bike and go on a poker run with the Lords of Iron Motorcycle Club.

The second annual Carson City Off-Road adventure begins Friday with multiple races, a bike and gear expo, and a music festival complete with beer garden, food, on and off-trail and pavement thrills.

This week's edition of It's Your City with host Cortney Bloomer features Kurt Meyer, program manager for the second annual Epic Rides Off Road Carson City mountain biking event, this Friday through Sunday, June 16-18.

It’s the perfect time to enjoy family and friends and some great music. The Carson Nugget powers it up to rock out tonight with Volt: A Tribute to AC/DC in their ballroom. Dayton Valley Golf Course offers up dinner and a show with this year’s debut of Concerts on the Green. Blues Monster and pulled pork sliders are a great way to enjoy the evening.

Fire up that grill, Carson City, we’ve got the perfect weather to kick off the summer. The early Farmers Market at Musser and Nevada offers the perfect finishing touches to any picnic or bar-be-que. It’s all aboard for train lovers: the V&T begins its runs to Virginia City this weekend and the historic Glenbrook Engine is all steamed up at the Railroad Museum. So many things deserve to be in this first sentence: do I mention the annual West Side Bike Month Cruiser Ride, make a Star Wars pun about May the Fourth, or focus on the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony? What I love most about Carson City is our ability to be outdoorsy, patriotic, geeky, and none of the above - all at the same time. If you don’t find something you absolutely have to check out in today’s “Things to Do”, please look at my list again in a day or two, or sometime next week.

Hang in there, Carson City, spring is coming. If you can make it through today you’ll be rewarded with warming temperatures, with Sunday starting a nice little run in the 70s. Celebrate Arbor Day with a tree planting at Mills Park, and if you’re one of the first fifty arrivals you’ll get your own sapling to plant. Afterwards, take a stroll with the Carson City Historical Society and learn about the history of our big downtown trees. Tonight, Carson Comedy takes over the Carson Nugget and the Brewery Arts Center as Dan Gabriel and Chris Franjola bring the laughs.

Help Western Nevada College Geology Cub raise funds while adding a few gems to your rock collection this Friday, April 28.

The public can start or grow its own collection by attending the Geology Club’s second annual free Gem and Mineral Sale that runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bristlecone Building lobby in Carson City.

Join Pioneer High School students and Mr. Paul Lorion at their second annual spring art show at the Brewery Arts Center this Friday, April 21, 2017, during an open reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Student work will include paintings, drawings and ceramic pieces that illustrate the creativity of the Pioneer Panther student body.

Mark Twain Elementary School will host its community wide My School Color Run this Saturday, April 22, 10 a.m. at Mills Park in Carson City.

Participants are encouraged to sign in early beginning at 9 a.m. The two mile event, a fundraiser for the school, is designed as all ages walk, jog or run and is for all fitness abilities.

During the event, participants pass through designated color zones as part of an enhanced spring time bounty of full on colorful experiences. This is the second annual event.

Heading a stellar line-up of speakers for the second annual UAS Search and Rescue Symposium, Gene Robinson, who literally wrote the book on how to use drones for search and rescue and disasters, will talk about how to train public safety agencies in the use of aerial and ground robots in emergency response.
