Carson City scavenger hunt among events statewide to mark 50th year of National Preservation Act

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.

Missing dogs that prompted helicopter search found safe

Two dogs that went missing a week ago were found safe, according to their owners. The shaggy white Spinoni Italiano dogs were found Friday.

On Wednesday the owners chartered a helicopter in their effort to find the dogs Mara and Adele who went missing after chasing rabbits in east Carson City.

Cities Children Return Home

At noon on Saturday over 40 children are expected to return to the only place they called home. Northern Nevada Children's Home propelled many children into amazing lives as teachers, college professors, plastic surgeons, city managers, transportation directors, mothers, fathers and happy productive citizens.

The weather app on my phone says that it’s supposed to be a sunny weekend hitting a high around 91 degrees. That sounds like summer to me! Get out and enjoy our valley and the surrounding towns, there will be plenty of good times. Carson Valley Days has begun in our neighbor to the south, complete with carnival at Lampe Park. Tonight, welcome a new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery at the Courthouse: a reception for the artists of ‘Industrial Arts’ begins at 5 p.m. Meet the Journey of Hope bike riders at Western Nevada College; plenty of activities for everyone.

UNR to award most-ever degrees through three Spring Commencement ceremonies

The University of Nevada, Reno’s 2015 Spring Commencement will confer 2,454 degrees and certificates. The commencement exercises will take place in three ceremonies Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 and will be held on the University’s historic Quadrangle, located on the southern part of campus. Each ceremony focuses on particular colleges and, for the first time, grant both undergraduate and graduates degrees for each of those colleges.

International film weekend takes root in Carson City; Independent films with local ties to screen free at WNC

What began last year with a desire by five local women to bring international films to Carson City will this year be a multi-venue, free three-day event, Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 5-7. Last year’s event was a rousing success, paving the way for this year’s larger festival.

The Carson City Community Center and Western Nevada College will be venues for viewing three foreign feature-length films, three independently produced films, and several Brewery Arts Center contest-winning short films.

The Carson High Class of 1969 will hold a 45th reunion Friday Sept. 12 at Westside Pourhouse, 110 W Telegraph St. for a meet and greet.

Cause Warrior Ride Passes Through Dayton, Northern Nevada

In early morning fog on Sunday, July 20, 2014, a team of six riders began a 70-day long journey across the U.S. to bring awareness and support to today’s wounded warriors and their families. The 2014 Cause Warrior Ride Team will stop in over 70 cities and towns along the route to historic West Point in New York. They arrived in Dayton, NV on Friday, July 25, departing the following morning.

Easy Company, 506th parachute infantry regiment, 101st Airborne Division was not the only band of brothers. Most of the 16 million men who served our country during WW II became closer to their shipmate or foxhole buddy than their own family. The First Special Service Force, the Black Devils, was a brigade of commandos from two nations, 60 percent USA and 40 percent Canadians.
