Sesquicentennial Fair in Carson City highlight Nevada 150 events throughout August

Many celebrations are scheduled statewide in the month of August. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Aug. 1 through Aug. 14.

On Thursday at 11 a.m., the Wells Fargo coach will deliver Gov. Brian Sandoval, Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and Wells Fargo Regional Manager Chad Osorno and Wells Fargo Northern Nevada Area Manager Sean French to Fuji Park in south Carson City to preside over the official opening and ribbon cutting of Carson City’s contribution to the NV150 Anniversary event, the NV150Fair.

The NV150 Fair, today through Aug. 3 at Fuji Park, will feature more than 90 4-H and Future Farmers of America kids from around the region showcasing their animals and farm knowledge. This is to be a full fair with food vendors, commercial vendors, a carnival, auction, live entertainment, a rodeo and more.

The NV150 Fair is a 5 day event featuring agriculture, carnival, evening entertainment and community showcase. There will be a 4H/FFA livestock show with an auction and small animal show, dairy cow and dairy goat show, horse show and numerous other events including sewing, baking and crafts. The third season of The Lake Tahoe Summer Fest Concert Series will take place Aug. 1-17 at Sierra Nevada College at Lake Tahoe in Incline Village, Nev. The festival features classical music concerts and engagement opportunities during the first three weekends in August. Nevada will take the national spotlight at Fallon Fights: Rural Rumble in Fallon, NV (Churchill) at 6:00 p.m. on Aug. 8. ESPN2 will broadcast the boxing event as part of the network’s “Friday Night Fights” series in partnership with Terry and Tommy Lane’s promotions company Dynasty Boxing and DiBella Entertainment. The Aurora Military Veterans Memorial Monument Dedication Ceremony will take place at the Aurora Cemetery in Aurora, NV (Mineral) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 9. In commemoration of Nevada’s sesquicentennial, the Mineral County Board of Commissioners and the Mineral County Museum will commission the erection of a memorial monument. The memorial honors the graves of veterans who never received proper burial for their service to the nation. The service will be assisted by the Gen. Journalists statewide are joining together for the 19th Annual Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame Gala at the Four Seasons Hotel in Las Vegas, NV on Aug.9. UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Carson City School District hosted a ceremony Wednesday morning with local dignitaries from the Nevada Department of Education and officers from local military bases. Carson High School was honored with a Nevada Purple Star School designation for supporting military-connected students and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City will host its first "Walking as One at 1" labyrinth walk on Saturday, May 4 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 314 N. Division at Telegraph.

"Walking as One at 1" happens on World Labyrinth Day each year where participants across the globe engage in a labyrinth walk at 1 p.m. local time. This synchronized practice creates a 24-hour rolling wave of peaceful energy that passes from one time zone to the next across the world. The idea is to collectively contribute to a sense of unity and harmony.

The wise early settlers of Carson City made sure future residents would enjoy the beauty and the endless benefits that come with the planting of trees. What was then but a barren high-desert sagebrush landscape, is today a celebration of the hardiness of trees as well as the early settlers.

On Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m., the Washoe Valley Forum hosts a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure.” Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff assume the fictive characters of wrangler Clive, and cook/housekeeper Vivian, that worked at a Washoe Valley “divorce ranch” from the 1940s to 1960s.

Local musician Liz Broscoe has released a song that features Lake Tahoe and the challenges to keep it blue, and it could become the next battle cry to protect the lake.

Liz has been working on a new album for over a year and she wrote "Mother Earth" as one of the songs for that album. She had finished writing the song when she saw the videos of the thousands of pounds of trash left on Zephyr Shoals on the 4th of July.

A local family and others aided in the search and location of a missing elderly woman Saturday night in Carson City.

Carson High School named Mikey Hoffer and Selma Works as the 2024 Prom King and Queen. A short coronation ceremony was held during the prom dance. Additionally, Rodrigo Diaz and Alissa Powers were crowned Carson High School’s Friendship Ball King and Queen during that dance Thursday evening in the Morse Burley Gym.
