YERINGTON — The Lyon County Planning Commission on Tuesday unanimously rejected a use permit proposal for an exotic animal rescue facility in the Mason Valley area after it had learned of litigation underway from the non-profit organization's current facility in Oregon.

Senator Keith Pickard of southern Nevada, the man behind the hotly-debated bee bill, is standing behind his legislation in the face of controversy; however, he says, the Legislative Council Bureau of the Nevada State Legislature is at fault for not following his original intention. The bill's original intention was to stop the spread of Africanized Bees in Nevada, he says, which needs to be dealt with on a state level.

The April Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on April 4 beginning at 8:30 am. Items on the table for discussion include a tax on tobacco vapor products, legislation regarding marijuana shop taxes, expanding hiking trail systems, upcoming legislation, and more.

The April 4 meeting will occur in the Sierra Room of the community center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong is opening the doors of the sheriff's office for 12 consecutive Wednesday nights as part of its annual Citizen's Academy, which enables residents to have a better understanding of the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Western Nevada College offers 30 hours of new driver education. The class meets requirements to obtain a Nevada driver's license. It uses lectures, interactive CD's, guest speakers and videos in a classroom setting to cover Nevada driving regulations, basic vehicle control, and challenging situations.

CARSON CITY — A slew of interesting bills and presentations are ahead this week. A bill to establish the Stewart Indian School museum is on the move Monday. Also on Monday, lawmakers will consider raising the maximum age of a “runaway or homeless youth” from 18 to 24. A physician assisted suicide bill will be heard Monday afternoon.

The Adams 308 N. Curry Building in Carson City will be 90 percent-plus occupied as of next week, with the anticipated opening of Squeeze In. Parking downtown will become more of a premium. Hello fellow anglers, Not really the right weather to go fishing recently. But us die hards will get out there no matter what. Before we get to some reports, I would like to put a few rumors and report to rest.

My first full-time job after college was assistant city engineer in Urbana, Illinois in 1972. I worked on my liberal Democrat green interests: bikeways, undergrounding communications and power lines, better sewer systems, sidewalks, traffic, planning and zoning codes.

I learned a key lesson in those matters. Its breadth and importance would become clearer as my career progressed.

One day the public works director, a crotchety old conservative Republican, said: “You want bikeways, underground lines, sidewalks and all those things? Well, it really is easy and cheap.”

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City is hosting a public workshop to solicit comments on proposed new regulations pertaining to treatment and repatriation of objects and human remains from known Native American burial sites on private property.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit began the sale of Christmas tree permits on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018. Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest have been available since Nov. 1.

The Project known as Vintage at Kings Canyon (the Andersen Ranch) is again before city officials. The applicants are asking for an amendment to the originally approved Planned Unit Development (PUD) from December of 2016.

CARSON CITY — Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be available for purchase beginning Thursday, Nov. 1. The U.S. Forest Service Christmas Tree Program is designed for families, businesses, and institutions wishing to cut their own trees for decorating.

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 through Dec. 7) is here and if you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or a Prescription Drug plan, then you will be familiar with the Annual Notice of Change document (ANOC). It is extremely important to review this document as it will help insure you are getting the most out of your Medicare Advantage Plan. The ANOC was mailed to plan members no later than Oct. 1 and it details any changes in coverage that will take effect in January 2019.

Hello fellow anglers, the weather has cooled and fall has shown its face. The aspens in the Hope Valley area have started to show their true colors. Days are shorter and the water temperatures have cooled considerably. Which means the fish will start to feed again.

CARSON CITY — The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada this week approved new regulations related to state “Call Before You Dig” requirements for residential and commercial excavation projects.

RENO — Mountain snowpack is a primary source of water for the arid western United States. This region, which includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah, receives precipitation in mountains far from agricultural fields, and during the winter months when crops are not grown.

Hello fellow anglers, I have away fishing in Oregon and the northern California coastal waters for a few weeks. The fishing was phenomenal, but so happy to get back to the local fall fishing in our local area lakes and streams.

You’ll find annual events like Civil War Days in Virginia City and the Best in the West Rib Cook-off in Sparks, in addition to smaller happenings like the monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk and a roller derby double-header.
