October in Northern Nevada means more than Nevada Day. There are also outhouse races, fall festivals and Oktoberfests; all three of which are happening this first weekend of October around the region.

Seeliger Elementary School in Carson City will celebrate its 26th Annual Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s event will feature an amazing array of raffle prizes, dunk tank, craft fair, silent auction, cake walk, carnival games, Bouncy Castles, prizes, food, bake sale, Nevada-grown pumpkins, wagon rides, juggling demonstrations and lots of family fun. Celebrate Fall with a genuine Carson City tradition. The school is located at 2800 Saliman Road.

When is it time to pick fruit or vegetables?

Size and color are not always reliable in determining harvest time for apples and pears. Grapes and berries on the other hand are ripe when they get to be the right color. Apples and pears develop to the highest quality when picked mature, a stage of development prior to ripe.

Everywhere you look, we are ready for Halloween: skeletons and cobwebs, pumpkins and monsters, witches and headstones. Tonight is the real deal. There have been several Halloween celebrations already, but nothing beats trick-or-treat night. Get started at the Carson Mall, then head over to the Nevada Humane Society for even more candy. The Downtown Business Association welcomes the costumed kids to their Candy Crawl. But there’s nothing quite like the historic west side when it comes to Halloween.

Chances are, you’ll need to recover from yesterday a little. Downtown Carson City has you covered with a ‘Sunday, Bloody Mary Sunday’ bloody mary contest in Arlington Square. Get your trick-or-treat on at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada or at the historic Wungnema House at the east end of Mills Park. Grand Entrance at the La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow begins at 12 p.m. Its new home at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center (MAC) has let the annual event become even bigger. You’ve got one last chance to get your fill of cotton candy and the Ferris Wheel: the RSVP Nevada Day Carnival closes at 8 p.m.

SUNDAY:

It’s Nevada Day weekend, and that means the annual parade and festivities will bombard downtown Carson City with thousands of revelers. I made the decision to put all of the parade related events into a separate list for a few reasons: one, this list would be way too long otherwise; two, Halloween fun is plentiful all weekend long; and three, I want my list to be as easy to read as possible. Read on for events throughout Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, Silver and Virginia Cities.

Nevada Day is just around the corner, but don’t jump the gun. This weekend offers fun for the young and young-at-heart. If you’ve got more apples than you know what to do with, the Greenhouse Garden Center has a cider press available today. Play BINGO for a good cause at the Carson City Senior Center, and don’t forget your costume. Carson City Symphony Association begins their 34th Season today with a concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater; as always, those under 18 get free admission.

Welcome back to the weekend, readers. Halloween stuff is plentiful (go HERE for a complete list of upcoming activities), pumpkins are patched, the ghosts are walking, and there are loads of events to keep you, your friends and family entertained. The Harvest Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum is a fun treat for kids of all ages. It’s time for the annual all-day downtown Ghost Walk. From 10 a.m.

It’s a roller derby kind of day. Catch the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson City Community Center as they scrimmage to raise funds for Moms on the Run. You’ve still got plenty of pumpkin opportunities with the Nevada Railroad Museum’s Harvest Train or the Corley Ranch Harvest Festival in Gardnerville. It’s a classic whodunnit on the big screen. From harvest trains to harvest fairs and festivals, the Nevada state capital was alive with the sights, sounds, colors and activities of autumn Saturday.

Leaves turning, wind blowing, and all things pumpkin sprouting up everywhere. It is absolutely autumn in Northern Nevada. Get ready for Halloween with your choice of pumpkin patches. Seeliger Elementary School is hosting theirs for the twenty-fifth year in a row. Take a trip on the V and T Steam Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum, actually take several trips. The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. So many more fun activities are available to you, you’ll have to read on to see them all.

Celebrating a quarter century of turning the round, orange members of the squash family into memorable Halloween carving traditions, Seeliger Elementary School in Carson City will host its 25th annual Pumpkin Patch this Saturday, Oct. 14.

It might be a blustery Sunday, but the snow isn’t falling yet so enjoy what’s left of our Indian Summer. Whatever you couldn’t cram into Saturday is probably still around: the Aviation Round-up, Italian Festival, and the Outhouse races are still going strong. The Carson City BMX season is coming to an end soon, go check out their races at Livermore Sports Complex. Some weekends are pretty cut and dry, just a few things to choose among. This, however, is not one of those weekends. High-flying, death-defying action takes over the Minden Airport as the Aviation Roundup Air Show takes to the skies. Pasta-lovers won’t want to miss the Eldorado Great Italian Festival in downtown Reno. Carson City’s monthly Downtown Wine Walk gets a dose of nostalgia as the Western Airstream Convention sets up shop and welcomes the curious.

With all the motorcycles on the road, you may be looking for some peace and quiet. Luckily, it’s fee-free day at all of the Nevada State Parks. Load up the kids, pack a picnic, at head to the great outdoors. Don’t miss out on the last-of-the-season Farmers Market at Third and Curry, stock up on local honey and load your basket with yummy stuff. Oktoberfest takes over the McFadden Plaza at 3 p.m. Bavarian and German beers, authentic food, and live music await. Keep reading for everything the area has to offer.

The 4th of July was celebrated earlier this month with all its traditional foods, including watermelon. It’s a good thing that watermelon is a part of this summer holiday’s food mix because its health benefits may have helped counteract the impacts of the assortment of less-than-healthy foods we eat that day.

It’s that time of year again. The ghosts and ghouls come out of hiding and paint the town orange. Halloween isn’t just one night around here. Combined with the festivities of Nevada Day, you can be sure to enjoy at least a week’s worth of celebrating.

Hold onto your broomstick, this weekend is bound to sweep you up in Halloween fun. First you’ll need a pumpkin. The Harvest Train Festival and Pumpkin Patch at the Nevada State Railroad Museum is a good place to start. Take the costumed kids to a Trunk or Treat at Advantage Auto Works off Old Hot Springs Road courtesy of the members of Carson Cruise Meet and Greet. Team up with Mark Twain for a ghostly tour of our haunted downtown or you can choose a shorter tour that’s perfect for families. Keep reading, this is just the tip of the candy corn.

SATURDAY:

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. – Enjoy an evening of old-fashioned Halloween fun at Fort Churchill State Historic Park. This family-friendly event will feature a variety of activities including harvest games on the museum lawn, a scavenger hunt around the fort ruins and pumpkin carving and scarecrow building contest.

Harvest time at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM) started Saturday in Carson City with a cornucopia of family fun and entertainment.

The Harvest Train returned to Carson City Saturday morning for another two-weekend run in October, steaming into Wabuska Station to begin its celebration of the fall season.

The weekend is here and you’ll find plenty to do in Carson City and the surrounding valleys. Run from zombies in Virginia City as the REDRUN obstacle race returns. Find the perfect pumpkin at the annual Seeliger Elementary Pumpkin Patch. The long-awaited Animal Shelter has been built and is now home to adoptable pets waiting for a home: take a tour at their open house after the 10 a.m. ribbon cutting. Filled with the spirit of fall in the air, the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, and its supporters, Friends of the NSRM, will host the second annual Harvest Train event over two weekends in October.

Back by popular demand is the Scarecrow Festival at the Carson Mall, held Thursday through Saturday this week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

If you are a newcomer to our area or if you have never been there, fall is a great time of the year to visit Apple Hill, one of our favorite destinations. And, if you are a newcomer, about now you are probably wondering, “What and where in the heck is Apple Hill?”

UPDATE: The Light after Dark Walk/Run scheduled at Riverview Park in Carson City tonight has been canceled due to the dangerous conditions of the track from the bad weather. The historic trains of the Nevada State Railroad Museum meet up with an old-fashioned pumpkin patch, artists and crafters that include Carson City Confections and Great Basin Woodcrafts and more this Saturday and Sunday at the Harvest Train Festival in Carson City. Trains run throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fun. Games. Pumpkins. It is Fall and the annual Pumpkin Patch was a great chance to get pumpkins for Halloween Jack O' Lanterns. Pumpkins large and small were sold early in the day as children bought tickets to play the various games of Witches Hat Toss, Brew and the ever popular dunk tank brought around from the Northern Nevada Children's Museum.

The weather couldn't have been better for this annual event.
