Western Nevada, Lyon County brace for flooding as snowmelt makes its way from the Sierra

Continued warming temperatures will increase snow melt this week, with the likelihood of flooding near some creeks and streams flowing out of the Sierra. The Walker River through the Mason Valley and Yerington is expected to reach major flood stage early this week, with record levels possible, according to the National Weather Service.

Prison inmate walkaway in custody after stealing and crashing Carson City water truck

UPDATE: 3:31PM: The suspect who escaped a Carson City prison work camp and stole a water truck, crashing it Wednesday morning on Foothill Road in Douglas County had attempted to steal another vehicle, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

A 49-year-old minimum security male inmate walked away from a work detail at the Stewart Conservation Camp in south Carson City on Tuesday night, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Carson City emergency crews respond to large gas leak at Nevada and William streets; evacuation lifted

UPDATE 3:54PM: The evacuation has been lifted for homes and businesses around the area of Nevada and William Street following a gas leak earlier this afternoon. The area is now considered safe and free of gas vapors. Carson City Public Works and Southwest Gas remain on the scene.

UPDATE 3:37PM: The gas leak at Nevada and William Street has been stopped. Carson City firefighters are now processing the area to determine when it is deemed safe to allow people back into homes and businesses. The city has provided an updated map of the affected area. A powerful winter storm associated with a strong atmospheric river will bring gusty winds and very heavy precipitation to the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas and deep snow to the upper Sierra tonight through late Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Breaking News: All Carson City schools canceled due to flooding

With flooding reported at some of the school campuses and around town, the Carson City School District announced just before 8 a.m. that all schools now CLOSED Friday due to heavy flooding.

Late last night the district had announced that schools were on a two-hour delay. However due to the nature of flooding overnight, the district decided to close all campuses. See the photos and video by Jeff Moser below.

Carson City activates Emergency Operation Center to respond to flooding

UPDATE: Carson City activated its Emergency Operations Center. Staff is now expecting rain tonight through Friday morning, with a low around 39. Winds could gust up to 45 miles per hour.
The City’s storm drain system is beyond capacity and water is running out of some of the storm drains and manholes and there is water over many of the roadways. Please avoid flooded areas and stay away from the river.
