Poets will be aiming for a slam-dunk with a cheering and jeering audience at Sierra Nevada College’s Fifth Annual Poetry Slam at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, on the Incline Village campus.

Mt. Rose event updates for March-April

Some of the upcoming Mt. Rose events have been re-scheduled due to impending weather. Here is the revised calendar:

Diamond Peak at Lake Tahoe hosts annual Poker Run on March 12

Here's a chance to draw cards, win prizes and ski or ride while at Lake Tahoe's Diamond Peak this Saturday.

The Hyatt Regency is the sponsor of the fourth annual Poker Run at Diamond Peak Ski Resort set for Saturday, March 12. Skiers and boarders are urged to join in at Diamond Peak a day of fun on the mountain and and many a chance to win some great prizes.

Heavenly snowboard team hosts March 11 rail jam

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Shredtacular Rail Jam event at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, March 11 from 4:30 to 10 p.m.

Open to skiers and snowboarders of all ages, the Shredtacular will be held on a feature built by Rob Giustina of On Course Events. Entry is $20 and includes a goodie bag and a raffle ticket for a chance to win tons of prizes.

March 5 is the date of a highly-popular chukar fundraiser

Saturday evening, March 5, will be the date of my all-time favorite fundraiser: The highly-popular and fun-filled, Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser, which will be held as usual at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
More importantly, this year’s version will be its 25th.

Wow! 25 years! Congrats for all you have done for Nevada’s wildlife!

People are Plunging into Tahoe on March 19

Teams of super heroes, penguins, pirates and other eye-catching characters jumped into Lake Tahoe last winter. On March 19, they’ll do it again, and you’re invited to join them as Special Olympics Nevada co-hosts the “Freezin’ for a Reason” Polar Plunge® 2011 at Zephyr Cove, South Lake Tahoe. The event is open to all and will include entertainment, a costume contest, prizes, and Special Olympics athletes, coaches, and volunteers who will share their experiences with the organization’s inspiring programs.

Feast of Chocolate

A full buffet of chocolate treats, featuring the creations of students of the award winning Carson High Culinary Arts Program will be featured at this year's Feast of Chocolate. This is the 12th annual fundraiser for local scholarships and the AAUW Educational Opportunities Fund. Also, raffle prizes will be awarded. Come enjoy the fun!

MontBleu prepares for big game weekend at Lake Tahoe

Four days of parties, games, competitions and tournaments are in the works to celebrate Super Bowl XLV at Lake Tahoe's MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa. The resort is pulling out all the stops in preparation for its Big Game Weekend, Feb. 3-6.

Mystery Dinner Theater continues at Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino

Murder Mystery Dinner Theater Proscenium Players, Inc. in conjunction with the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino in Carson City are about to unveil a mystery dinner show about an 80th birthday party attended by two feuding Irish families trying to get their hands on the Wild Irish Rose Whiskey recipe running weekends through Jan. 29. The performance is called "Eat, Drink & Be Murdered!"

Proscenium Players offer a menu of mystery this weekend

Proscenium Players rise again with a murder mystery on the menu starting Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. when cast members mingle with the audience to gather clues about the upcoming murder story "Eat, Drink and Be Merry." Some pre-show music will be offered by Sweet Vocal Renditions featuring Sweet Molly McGee. Irish fare dinner begins at 6:30 with the show starting at 7:15 p.m.

Prizes will be given to the firs three audience members who solve mystery.

Several Tahoe ski resorts to open this weekend

A handful of Lake Tahoe ski resorts prepare to open for the season this weekend thanks to an early snowfall, snowmaking guns and a fairly large storm set to punch the Sierra.

Around a foot or more of natural snow across the Sierra earlier this month certainly helped get things moving. With this weekend's anticipated storm, which may bring anywhere from 2-4 feet of snow to the Sierra, resorts should get a nice healthy boost just in time for the holiday season.

Heavenly Foundation ski and board swap this weekend at Lake Tahoe's MontBleu

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the 22nd annual Ski and Snowboard Swap at Lake Tahoe's MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19-20.

Proceeds will benefit the Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides Lake Tahoe ski and snowboard programs for regional youth, local middle school students, and the S.O.S. program.

Carson City families turn out for Healthy Kids fair

Families by the dozens packed Carson Mall in Carson City on Saturday for the Healthy Kids, Happy Kids health fair.
The Kid's Talking Wall event for the month of November at the mall featured health screenings, exhibits, demonstrations, entertainment, games and prizes.

Annual Tahoe 'Pray for Snow' party at Tahoe's Fresh Ketch restaurant

Skiers and boarders know when it comes to predicting snow at Lake Tahoe, a wing, a party and a prayer never hurts.

Prepare yourself for a snow dance at the alter as the annual “Pray for Snow” party will happen on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at Fresh Ketch Restaurant in South Lake Tahoe. There will be live music, dancing, beverages and an avalanche of prizes.

Obesity is a condition that affects many children in the U.S. and according to the CDC those numbers continue to rise. Join us this Saturday as we show you how to get active and stomp out obesity! Leadership Class Ribbon-Cutting at Carson City Animal Services


Join Mayor Crowell and other dignitaries at Leadership Carson City Class of 2010 Ribbon Cutting and Class Project Unveiling at the Carson City Animal Services, 3770 Butti Way beginning at 11 a.m.

The Leadership Class of 2010 certainly has made a difference in the lives of our canine friends. This was an ambitious project and one sorely needed. There will be great raffle prizes so come out and join in the festivities to kick of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.

Bowl for Gold fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics set for Nov. 12

The Northern Nevada Special Olympics program will support training and competition for 97 new bowlers this year and wants all area bowlers to participate in a fundraiser.

The "Bowl for the Gold" community fundraiser will take place on Friday, Nov. 12 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno. Sign-in begins at 5 p.m. Bowling begins at 6 p.m. This is the inaugural "Bowl for the Gold” event in Reno.  A “Bowl for the Gold” event has been hosted for three consecutive years in Las Vegas to support southern Nevada bowlers. 

Play Carsonopoly At Carson City Library

Carson Area Wellness Association will host an afternoon of “Carsonopoly”, a board game that’s just like Monopoly, but with Carson City businesses and landmarks on the board instead.
 If you like Monopoly, you’ll love Carsonopoly. Using the very same premise of the world-famous game, Carsonopoly takes the player on a tour of Carson City. Have fun, and learn about the town too!

Free Family Fitness Fun at Carson High School

A morning of free Family Fitness Fun will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Carson High School Gym from 10 a.m. to noon.
The event is sponsored by Carson City ATA, Black Belt Academy and We Can. Activities include martial arts, obstacle course, inline hockey, pad kick, hockey shoot-out, board break, ZUMBA and lots more.
There will be free t-shirts, raffle prizes, food and fun for the whole family. Some of the prizes include a new children's bike, Mt. Rose lift tickets, $5-off at Play it Again Sports Cards, ATA martial arts lessons, and Walmart gift cards.

After spending decades helping so many here in Carson City, Vikki Hopkins finds herself on the receiving end of that help today. In September 2010 she was diagnosed with an advanced form of lung cancer. Upon hearing about it, her co-workers started spreading the word about her struggle. Almost immediately a movement began to help Vikki and her family with this struggle. The response was immediate and overwhelming. People from all over the city began to ask what they could do to help, so a benefit fundraiser was arranged.

Chamber hosts ribbon cutting at V&T Coffee Company

Join the V&T Coffee Company at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 for an official ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce. The V&T Coffee Company is located at 3667 South Carson Street. Special include $1 drinks all day, fresh made-to-order donuts for 25 cents and raffle prizes.

Tahoe Ridge Winery to host Carson City chamber mixer

The Tahoe Ridge Winery and Marketplace will host the next Carson City Chamber of Commerce mixer. The mixer begins at 5 p.m. with a wine tasting. Tahoe Ridge Winery and Marketplace is located at 1644 Highway 395 in Minden. The cost is $5 for chamber members and $20 for non-members and includes the wine tasting, food and raffle prizes.
