It's "big-band jazz times two" when the Carson High Jazz Band and the Mile High Jazz Band present their eleventh annual combined concert, the Mile High-Carson High Jazz Extravaganza, on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, 7:00 p.m., in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, Carson City. The Extravaganza is sponsored by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and the Carson City Band Association as a benefit for Carson High music programs.

Tickets for the Friends of the Carson City Library 4th annual New York New Year's Eve Party are on sale now through Dec. 21. This spectacular annual party helps raise money for the Carson City Library.

Hosted by the Friends of the Carson City Library and the Carson City Library Foundation, the event runs from 6 to 10 pm in the Carson Nugget Ballroom.

The Carson Baseball Boosters Club, Inc. is kicking off our biggest fundraiser of the year! The 6th Annual Charity Poker Night Fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Fuji Park. Creativity goes wild this week as the Friends of the Carson City Library hosts its annual Home for the Holidays Handmade Gifts and Creations Sale from Thursday through Saturday at the Carson City Library auditorium.

There'll be plenty of unique creations, handmade accessories, stocking stuffers and ideal gifts for the holiday season, plus raffle prizes too.

An all-ages group of nearly 200 set up camp Sunday night in front of the new Buffalo Wild Wings on South Carson Street in Carson City, each trying to be among the first 100 through the door at 11 a.m. Monday for the grand opening and chance to eat free wings for a year.

The Lodge Assisted Living Community is celebrating the Thanksgiving season by hosting a Harvest Party on Thursday, November 21 from 2 – 4 pm. All local seniors are invited to attend.

The festivities include a harvest feast featuring roast turkey, baked ham and sweet potatoes, plus a special dessert. Party goers will also enjoy live entertainment including music by local favorites, The String Beings. All attendees will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win fun prizes.

Here's a great way to give to those active duty members of the military who won't be able to make it home for Christmas and those veterans at home that need a helping hand. The Carson City-based Web of Support group will host the "Be a Santa to A Veteran" fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 30 at Jimmy G's.

The Oncology on Canvas Wine Reception will be a special evening of art, wine, appetizers, entertainment, silent auction, 50/50 mystery raffle and socializing. The Carson City Raiders Booster Club's annual fundraiser and auction is this coming Sunday, Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carson Lanes Eleventh Frame Lounge, 4600 Snyder Avenue.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to purchase Christmas gifts for 20 homebound seniors in the community (our list of seniors and their modest wish lists are supplied to us by the Meals on Wheels program).

Each year our members shop, wrap, deliver and visit each home bound senior on our list. It's always a heart-warming experience to help make these seniors' holidays more merrier.

Finding ordinary magic just became a little easier for Amanda Aldridge, who teaches high school English in the agricultural community of Yerington, 80 miles outside of Reno. Thanks to money awarded through the Nevada Poetry Out Loud Program, a national poetry recitation competition for high school students, Aldridge added $500 in her budget for resources to help students overcome fears and experience the magic of poetry.

The Lodge Assisted Living Community invites all area seniors to celebrate Halloween at its monthly Senior Mingle. Party goers will enjoy devilish delights and spirits, ghoulishly good giveaways and eerie entertainment.

The frightening fun takes place October 31, from 2 – 4 pm in the Lodge’s dining hall.

Everyone is encouraged to dress up for the event, as there will also be a costume contest with prizes.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its annual Halloween costume ball 7-10:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. Tiffany Hopkins will teach an intermediate nightclub two-step lesson at 7 p.m. Costumes are optional, but there will be prizes for best holiday attire in four categories. Partners are not required.
