Last week, I wrote about the large snow drifts and huge snow fields that Elaine and I encountered on our hike toward Winnemucca Lake from the top of Kit Carson Pass on California S.R. 88.

Our purpose for the hike was three-fold: To walk on snow (which we did), to photograph some wildflowers (which we did) and to fish for Brook and Kamloop trout at Winnemucca Lake (which we did not, due to too much snow and too much wind).

This week, I am suggesting that you take the time to hike on that same Winnemucca Lake Trail to admire and photograph the wildflowers.

Here’s how to do so:

I haven't been doing hiking of late because of a back problem, but with my new electronic "tickle belt" I'm able to hit the hills again.

I recently returned to my old favorite Dead Man's Creek on Eastlake Boulevard about 5 miles from downtown Carson. It was 90-plus that day so I turned back burned out before reaching the gazebo that perches at the end of the trail, but I did discover a new sign at the trailhead, courtesy of Nevada Division of State Parks. It's one of the best trail signs I've seen in recent times.

Various faiths are coming together to have a picnic in Nevada’s capital Carson City at the end of the month.
Christians of various denominations, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Baha’is, and others, besides sharing food, music, games, prayers, a “Peace Cake”, etc., will also try to find similarities between their diverse traditions at second annual “Heal the World Interfaith Picnic of Nevada” on July 31, said Adina Richman Karst, vent coordinator.

Bring the family for a good old fashioned picnic and for games and prizes. For $15 you get food, a soft drink, a door prize ticket and a yellow ducky. Kids under 12 years are $5. Maybe your ducky will be the lucky prize winner ! Candidates will be there as guest speakers. All Democrats or those wanting to be are welcome. Hobart Reservoir, a small, high-mountain reservoir, located at an elevation of 7,600 feet in the mountains between Carson City and Lake Tahoe, will open for the 2011 fishing season on May 1.
Because of its high elevation and location, this reservoir is normally covered with ice, and surrounded by deep snow drifts, when it opens on May 1.

It will remain open to fishing through September 30.

Every summer Minden throws a series of concerts in Minden Park, under the bandstand. It’s a good excuse for the community to get together, have a picnic, and listen to some music.

If you like to fish in the State of Nevada, you might be interested in entering the 2011 Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association (OSA) fishing contest.

This annual contest is inexpensive, you can have fun fishing during the year and you might even win some nice cash, just before Christmas.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, U.S. Congressman Dean Heller, and Assemblyman Tom Grady joined Lyon County area officials to witness the striking of the first Lyon County sesquicentennial commemorative medallion at Dayton’s Northwest Territorial Mint on Tuesday.

Lyon County Commissioners, Sheriff, school trustees, superintendent, and members of the Historical Society of Dayton Valley were among those who attended the event and tour of the Mint with the Governor and other dignitaries.

The 17th annual Kids Auction and World's Greatest Barbecue could be said to be Carson's City's end-of-summer picnic. It certainly had all the fixins': Ribs, chicken, tri-tip, slaw, cornbread, potato salad, and lots of ice cream to go around.

The Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses, and jazz lovers proudly continue the annual August jazz festival that began in 2004. The Nevada Appeal has a story about the residents of Clear Creek Road putting up a gate to shut out public access.

This has been a long-simmering issue. You can't really blame the residents, who are trying to protect themselves from liability if someone gets hurt on this private road, which provides access to popular hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and picnic areas.

The 25th Annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival takes place the weekend of Aug 13-15. The weekend opens at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13 with a free open-air concert at the Davis Creek Park Amphitheater. The main Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival takes place from 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14 on the Bowers Mansion grounds, gate opens at 9 a.m., Cost $15 adults, $3 kids 2-12. Seven bluegrass bands will perform. Food and craft vendors on site.

With hot weather, dry lightening and drought conditions arriving this summer, conditions for explosive brush and forest fires across the Silver State has increased. Because of this, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office has announced plans to begin statewide fire restrictions on public lands beginning Friday, July 16.

It's a holiday weekend with lots of folks heading to campgrounds throughout the region. And where there's campers, there's bound to be bears.
Carson City and Lake Tahoe have experienced an active spring, including one bear breaking into a Carson City garage. The bear was taken down.

First, it's not in Fuji Park at all. It's behind the Carson City Fairgrounds, on the other side of the river, back where everyone can see it from the highway but you'll need signs and arrows to tell you how to get there. This could have been so much better if it was over by the grassy area of the park itself, maybe even built so that Clear Creek flows through it.

The Parks and Recreation Commission Tuesday evening started out with persistent horse people running up against immovable neighbors.
