Guru Road job postponed at Black Rock; work resumes April 30
Here's the latest from Friends of Black Rock Desert: This message is to let you know that we are POSTPONING the Guru Road Restoration project planned for this Saturday, April 23, to next Saturday, April 30. Because of taxes and Easter, this date just isn't working out.
Next Saturday, we will be clearing weeds, setting rocks upright, and attending to the various art installations along this unique piece of Nevada history. We still need the fronts from old TVs to use as windows in the TV Station (pictured), and also old plastic wall clocks (working or not). If you have these things in Reno, please email us and we can make arrangements to get them. No one has responded from the larger Black Rock community at this point, although we do have a core group of volunteers in Gerlach who will make sure that some effort is put forth. Perhaps you would like to join us? Please email us to let us know you're coming, volunteer@blackrockdesert.org.
As for the previously postponed project at the Soldier Meadows cabin, we do not yet have a new date for this. Please stand by and we will try to find a time in May or June for this project, which will be very rewarding. We will replace broken windows, repair the stove flue, lean-to, doors, and picnic bench. There's also some barbed wire fence clean-up inthe near vicinity, and of course camping at the hot springs is very pleasant! We did in fact hold our planned Citizen Spring Assessment project last weekend, and although it rained a little bit, we all had a great time visiting various water sources, learning how to make scientific measurements to record baseline information about riparian health, and camping at Soldier Meadows. We had a total of 27 participants and are very excited that this program has finally begun.
In the meantime, please visit us at Reno Earth Day in Idlewild Park on Sunday, May 1, and at X-Night on Thursday, May 5, at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno. And don't forget about the Black Rock Rendezvous, our gigantic Memorial Day Weekend event, which has conservation projects, Kids Camp, guided tours, a bicycle race, cowboy poetry, music, barbeque, and beer from Great Basin Brewing Company. Make reservations today!
