Governor, Lyon officials attend minting of Sesquicentennial Commemorative Medallion
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, U.S. Congressman Dean Heller, and Assemblyman Tom Grady joined Lyon County area officials to witness the striking of the first Lyon County sesquicentennial commemorative medallion at Dayton’s Northwest Territorial Mint on Tuesday.
Lyon County Commissioners, Sheriff, school trustees, superintendent, and members of the Historical Society of Dayton Valley were among those who attended the event and tour of the Mint with the Governor and other dignitaries.
Afterward, Lyon County area leaders attended a lunch reception at the historic Dayton Community Center. The catered lunch was prepared by Dayton High School’s Culinary Arts class, whose students showed their considerable talents with the presentation of a cake with a “free hand” rendering of the Lyon County sesquicentennial medallion in icing.
DHS art students contributed by creating ceramic platters of the medallion design. The Historic Society’s displays of historic photos of the area were featured at the event while table center pieces of fresh flowers and rustic decorations were supplied by Healthy Communities Coalition’s nursery, Community Roots. The event organizer, Linda Wimberly, concluded the reception with a slide show of historic photos of each community in Lyon County.
Lyon County officials commissioned the anniversary medallions to raise funds for an August county-wide picnic at Lake Lahontan to celebrate the 150-year history of the county.
The medallions will be available in bronze, copper, and silver, and can be ordered from Lyon County at (775) 463-6510 or by using the order forms at the sesquicentennial link on the Lyon County website, www.lyon-county.org.
