Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of October. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following area events are held Oct. 1-15:

The Reno Philharmonic Association celebrates Nevada's sesquicentennial with a Nevada 150th signature event dedicating the entire performance to the state during its Classix Two concert set for Oct. 11, 12 and 14, 2014 at the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts, Reno, Nev. This milestone performance marks the first full orchestral and choral arrangement of the state’s song, "Home Means Nevada."

The Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival presents Boogie Woogie Hall of Famer Carl Sonny Leyland in concert on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St., Carson City.

"Jazz & Beyond" is a yearly festival put on by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and its sponsors. Admission to this concert is free. Donations are requested and include a chance at a door prize.

This year, the United States celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' first visit to these shores. The "Jazz & Beyond: Carson City Music Festival" is excited to provide two exciting Beatles events in honor of that occasion.

The Mile High Jazz Band is proud to present legendary trombonist Bill Watrous in concert and in a master class on Monday, Aug. 11, at the Carson City Community Center.

These events are part of the "Jazz & Beyond: Carson City Music Festival," which runs from Aug. 1 to Aug. 17 and features over 40 events, mostly in the downtown Carson City area.

Many college students seek to enroll in summer classes to stay on track for graduation, or learn a new skill. At Western Nevada College students can choose from a variety of classes in the upcoming eight-week summer term. Classes begin June 9 and continue through August 2, unless otherwise noted.

More than 40 courses are scheduled for the summer, including writing, communications, art, music, theater, accounting math, and more. Over a dozen online classes are also available, providing students the flexibility of earning college credit while enjoying their summer activities.

Metropolitan Opera Star Matthew Polenzani and U.S. Billboard Classical Chart best-selling pianist Simone Dinnerstein will be thrilling audiences this August as soloists for the 2014 Lake Tahoe SummerFest.

When it comes to making perfect pitch, where melody and harmony fit together organically, Vince Gates has turned his Carson City music store into the equivalent of a six-piece power band that customers can't seem to get enough of.

Western Nevada College Carson City is offering youth piano classes in its high-tech, digital piano laboratory this spring semester. Youth can now enroll for classes in the same Clavinova lab that is a favorite with college students.

Professional pianist Sue Kinney teaches the classes on Friday afternoons. Beginning classes for Kindergarteners and first graders are offered from 4:30-5:20, p.m., second and third graders meet from 5:30-6:20 p.m., and fourth to sixth graders meet from 3:30-4:20 p.m.

Musician and educator John Shipley will present a lecture and demonstration with slides and audio samples on the history of rock n' roll, concluding with questions and comments from the audience and the raffle of an electric guitar. The Mile High Jazz Band Association and the Brewery Arts Center present pianists Alexander Tutunov, Lisa DeSpain, and Tristan Selzler in a Piano Summit on Sunday, August 4, 1:30 to 4:15 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King Street, Carson City. Admission is free.

Happy happens in Carson City. And those attending Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project headlined by WAR and its leader of more than 40 years, Lonnie Jordon, will have two women to thank when John Street adjacent to Café at Adele’s in Carson City, becomes a happy place of sorts July 9.

Growing up in Compton, Calif., Jordon may have spent more time listening to the old guys who were gathered on porches playing music than he should have, a fact he’s quick to say he’s not proud of.

Carson City Symphony is coming to Reno to perform for Artown! The concert is on Sunday, July 7, at 5:00 p.m., at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 Island Avenue. CARSON CITY — The Nevada Rural Housing Authority staff, along with its Board of Commissioners, are mourning the death of Commission member, Tom Cook. Cook died at Carson Tahoe Hospital, while surrounded by loving family, on April 25, 2013.

The Carson City Symphony Association presents an intimate, elegant evening of Music, Conversation, Wine, and Dessert on Friday, April 26, 7:30 p.m., at a private home in Jacks Valley, south of Carson City. Looking for something to do tonight? Los Angeles-based acoustic guitarist and pianist Kingwhistler will perform at Comma Coffee, beginning at 7 p.m.
"It is a real treat to have this talented singer songwriter from L.A. perform at Comma Coffee," said owner June Joplin. "He rocks his acoustic 'California Country' style on the guitar and piano."

After the first half of the concert, harmonica player Tom Stryker will lead a harmonica workshop for youth attending the concert. Each will be given a harmonica and learn to play a tune. After intermission, they will perform on stage.

General admission tickets are still available for Jorma Kaukonen’s performance this Thursday, Oct. 18 at The High Sierra Brewing Company in Carson City. Kaukonen, a founding member of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, is one of the most highly respected interpreters of Americana, Blues and American roots music. Pianist, educator, and scholar Carl Petersson will present a seminar on life and music of composer Leopold Godowsky on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., at Nightingale Concert Hall in the Church Fine Arts Building at the University of Nevada,
1335 N. Virginia Street, in Reno. Petersson's lecture includes visuals and live piano performance, followed by an informal question-and-answer discussion. It is open to piano students and the general public, admission free.

At the age of 14, years after requisite piano lessons - and discovering he didn't like the discipline required - Jorma Kaukonen discovered guitar and found it was his instrument.
The now Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, founding member of iconic rock band The Jefferson Airplane and of long-touring band Hot Tuna and legendary guitarist in his own right, plays High Sierra Brewing Company, Thursday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. in a show produced by Chili Bop Entertainment.
