Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Brian Duggan, Executive Editor of the Reno Gazette-Journal, the only daily newspaper still published in Northern Nevada. He will describe the challenges of putting out a new edition every 24 hours in the brave new world of online competition, private equity acquisitions and print journalism consolidation, even while plans unfold to build a new police headquarters right where the RGJ's newsroom now stands.

Hot rods, rat rods, souped up trucks and the men and women who made them will be making their way into the capital city this week for the annual Rockabilly Riot which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at Mills Park.

CARSON CITY — Nevada residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Nevada Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 28 with a “fee-free” day at Nevada’s State Parks. Park fees, including entrance, camping (Saturday night) and boating, where applicable, will be waived at state parks throughout Nevada.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region packed with excitement over the next three days. Events include the Silver State Art Festival at Fuji Park, suicide awareness walks in Carson City, a Celtic faire at Dangberg Home Ranch, the ninth annual Edible Pedal bike ride at Bowers Mansion, train rides in Virginia City and much more!

Heading into Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, events around the capital city region include a morning hike at Lake Tahoe, a Healthy Communities meeting in Virginia City, a cross-country convoy of vintage military vehicles that will make a stopover at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, activities at the Carson City Library, book author presentations at the Nevada State Library and Archives and the Brewery Arts Center, food trucks at Mills Park and more. Enjoy the day.

The nonprofit organization greenUP!, which provides environmental education to businesses announced a group effort to make our Nevada Day parade in Carson City a more sustainable event. A Nevada Day green team was assembled to find ways to reduce waste at the event and they are seeking volunteers for the Nevada Day parade and festivities on Oct. 26.

Events around the capital city include a monthly lunch series at the Nevada State Library featuring author, professor and poet Lindsay Wilson, a Sierra Nevada Forum discussion on Nevada's Native Tribes, past, present and future; heart and vascular screenings through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered, archery at Centennial Park, family craft and movie night at Carson City Library and more.

CARSON CITY — Sierra Lutheran will host its annual 7th and 8th Grade Visitation Day on Tuesday, October 15, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This event, which is free to all 7th and 8th graders across the five county area, is carefully designed to give students a multi-dimensional look into what has made Sierra Lutheran one of the top high schools in the region.

On Saturday, Sept. 14 Nevada Humanities will hold its sixth annual Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl in Reno celebrating this year’s theme “Unabridged.”

The Literary Crawl is the premier literary event in northern Nevada that will feature an exploratory day of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry readings, as well as panel discussions, book signings, and workshops.

Skip the line on the official walk day and instead sign up Tuesday at an early bird registration gathering for the 2019 Northern Nevada Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 21.

The early registration and gathering will take Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 639 Isbell Road, Suite 240 in Reno.

2019 was the inaugural year for the Northern Nevada Gambler 500. What is the Gambler 500 you ask? The Gambler 500 was born from a dream. A dream of giving forgotten, tossed aside and abandoned autos new life and a chance to become legendary.

About this time of year, I find my interest in gardening waning a bit. For one thing, it’s hot. For another, it’s already September and the first frost may not be far off, so why bother. In years past, I reminded people to expect the first frost around September 15 in most areas.

UPDATE: The National Weather Service has cancelled the Dense Smoke Advisory for the Greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas as visibility and air quality have improved across much of the area. Haze will likely remain in the valleys around the Reno metro area through the rest of the day.

The Walker Fire burning in northern California's Plumas County has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a dense smoke advisory for portions of northern and western Nevada, through 11 p.m. Sunday.

The advisory is for Lassen and Eastern Plumas counties, Eastern Sierra County, northern Washoe County, the Greater Reno area as well as Carson City and Carson Valley in Douglas County.

Carson High School will again open its doors a little wider and longer for the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Night like no other Sept. 9. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity, and diverse talents of Carson City.

Heading into the weekend, there’s plenty of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. Events include an artists fair at Carson Mall, the 60th annual camel and ostrich races in Virginia City, a memorial run in Carson City, the 28th annual Oktoberfest in Gardnerville, a Veterans Resource Fair at Carson Nugget, history walks at Mormon Station Park, live comedy and more.

The 2019 Silver State Art Festival is the third annual gathering in Carson City of award-winning gourd artists, painters, photographers, wood, glass and metal artists and from all over the Southwest. The festival runs Sept. 13-15 at Fuji Exhibit Hall, Park & Pavilion in Carson City.

On July 25, Joe Tummarello, a long-term client with Carson City-based sober-living facility Lyfe Recovery, passed away at Carson Tahoe Hospital. By all accounts, a month before his death he had been in fine health for a man of 76. He dealt with COPD and needed an oxygen tank to breathe in the high altitude of northern Nevada, but a check-up with his doctors during May of 2019 showed he was nowhere near the brink of death.

However, after being relocated to Carson City from Lyfe Recovery’s Reno facility, Joe’s medication was withheld and he was denied medical intervention after a rapid deterioration of his health, which ultimately, it is alleged, led to his death.

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada will be closed from September 30th through October 13th and will re-open on October 14th. The facility is getting a front of the museum upgrade with new pavers, picnic tables, and benches.

When Joe Tummarello moved into a sober living home in Carson City called Lyfe Recovery, his friends and family thought he was doing well. However, at the end of July, he wound up in the hospital after his health declined rapidly. His family says this was due to severe neglect at the hands of the owner and manager of the facility. By several accounts, he was denied medical treatment until a senior living home provider stepped in and took him to the hospital, where he died a week later.

The question is: did Joe Tummarello die before his time? And if the answer is yes, then is someone responsible for his demise?

A trough pushing moisture into the West Coast will bring a chance of widespread showers and thunderstorms to the Carson City region Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. the Dangberg Home Ranch Celtic Faire will be the final special event of the 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival. A celebration of the Irish, Scottish and Welsh people who helped to settle Carson Valley will offer a day filled with entertainment and activities for all ages.

The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada will hold consumer sessions Tuesday, Sept. 10 in Carson City regarding a proposed slight rate decrease for NV Energy customers in Northern Nevada.

RENO — How was one conservative Republican U. S. Senator from Nevada, which is comprised mostly of public lands, able to work with a majority Democratic Congress to get things done?

“Pickleball is not an old geezer’s game,” so stated Dina Stultz after finishing a set at Carson’s Multi-use Athletic Center, affectionately known simply as the MAC. She wants to let everyone know that pickleball is a serious game and can help in relieving all sorts health problems including reversing or slowing bone density issues, according to her medical doctor.
