Tahoe Queen runs aground early New Year's morning

A paddle-wheel cruise boat ran aground on the California side of Lake Tahoe only minutes into the new year, stranding hundreds of revelers for about two hours in sub-freezing temperatures, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The Tahoe Queen became stuck near its dock in South Lake Tahoe at the end of a cruise early Thursday, said El Dorado County sheriff's deputies.

Eleven arrests made during Stateline New Year's celebration at Lake Tahoe

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reports that the New Year’s Eve celebration in the casino core area of Stateline at Lake Tahoe went as planned without many problems or arrests.

Eight people were arrested in the downtown casino core area of Stateline, Nevada during the evening. Charges included battery, domestic battery, disorderly conduct, minor consuming alcohol and possession of a dangerous drug. Another three people were arrested for traffic related offenses and driving under the influence.

Carson City celebrants ring in the New Year 70's disco-era style

The Carson Nugget threw down the ultimate disco-era themed New Year's Eve party Wednesday night to ring in the new year. Illuminated disco balls, streamers, balloons, dancing and music all played out as party-goers celebrated the arrival of 2015.

The Spooner hike will be a snowshoe one if there is adequate snow. The outing will follow the Spooner Lake loop trail, which is a little over two miles. Very little change in elevation makes this trail a family favorite. Park entrance fees are waived for hike participants.

Topaz Lake to open to fishing on New Years Day

Topaz Lake, which is located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, will open its 2015 fishing season, one half hour before sunrise, on Thursday, Jan. 1.

If the weather is decent, if you don't have a massive hangover, if you like to fish and if you don't have anything else planned, this could be a fun way to start the New Year. Bundle up though because daytime temperatures in the area are not expected break 30 degrees.

Snow and cold weather arrives in Carson City to round out 2014

While the snow didn't come over Christmas, it did arrive before the new year. It is snowing in Carson City this morning, with around an inch or less (or more) on the ground around parts of town.

Snow showers will continue in Western Nevada this morning, heaviest from Reno through Minden/Gardnerville toward Hawthorne. Total snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is expected through the Reno/Carson City area with 2 to 4 inches south into Minden and Gardnerville.

Cold weather ahead for Carson City and the Sierra through New Year's Day

A strong cold front will push through the Sierra and northwest Nevada Monday night into Tuesday with overnight lows in the single digits at night to Carson City and Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service. Snow showers could develop along the front, but confidence among forecasters remains low.

Carson City will see a brief warmup Sunday with a high of 45 before temperatures drop below 40 and into the 20s for daytime highs and low teens and single digits at night through Friday.

Douglas County gears up for Lake Tahoe New Year's Eve Celebration at Stateline

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is making preparations for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration at Lake Tahoe starting on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014.

Due to the ordinarily high volume of celebrants within the Stateline casino core area during the event, U.S. Highway 50 may be closed to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive.
