New Location

Nevada is one of the few states that celebrate its Admission Day, and boy do we throw a party. A parade, competitions of strength and facial hair, hot air balloons, bloody marys, a carnival, pow wow, and free chili are just a few of the festivities awaiting the capital city on Saturday.

The party begins Friday this year with a ribbon cutting celebration of the 'new' downtown. The Nevada State Museum hits its 75th Anniversary this year and will have a day full of fun and surprises. Santa Claus will be visiting DeBug Computer in Carson City on Saturday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. to help bring Christmas cheer to those less fortunate. You'll find Debug in their new location at 1817 N. Stewart St, #30.

This is DeBug’s fourth year putting on an event to help the sheriff’s office with its Holiday with a Hero event, which pairs up Carson City sheriff's deputies, firefighters and public officials with dozens of pre-selected local students, many of whom don't have permanent homes and live in poverty.

Just in time for Saturday afternoon's monthly Wine Walk, sponsored by Carson City's Downtown Business Association (DBA), Simone and Greg Bartell held a grand re-opening of their Touched By Angels home and garden shop at 205 E. John Street.

Rich and Robin McGregor were all smiles Saturday afternoon as they opened the doors to the new Carson City Art Gallery and Pottery Studio inside the historic stage depot building located at 110 S. Curry Street in downtown Carson City.

There are multiple ways to say farewell to summer this weekend. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off is a local favorite, as is the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival. The historic building at 110 S. Curry Street, one of the oldest existing structures in the Nevada state capital, will soon have a new resident starting Sept. 3.

Deb Kytle welcomed a few dozen supporters Thursday night with a hug and a warm smile as she celebrated the grand opening of her business's new location in Carson City's historic west side neighborhood.

A crowd of guests lingered on the outside patio and milled about inside the 1,500 square-foot cottage-style dwelling located at 1203 N. Nevada Street.

The public is invited to celebrate the new home of Chi Skin Care and Massage, now located at 1203 N. Nevada Street in Carson City, with an open house celebration Thursday, May 19, beginning at 4 p.m.

Owner Deb Kytle said she couldn't be more pleased with the new space, a quaint residential building on Carson City's historic west side that nicely accommodates the needs of her business's skin treatment and massage therapy services.

"I just fell in love with the place," she said.

If you were looking for a lazy day, today might not be it. Carson City BMX welcomes moms to the track today; their Mother’s Day race was postponed due to the wet weather. Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

The changing of the monthly guard is happening. The first of May is Sunday and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Music, theater, sports, shopping and more will be abundant in the valley this weekend, so make sure to take a good look at this weekend’s list for all of your fun options.

We know better than trying to predict springtime weather in the Sierra foothills. A new wave of showers is expected Monday, but it could show up whenever it likes. When Julie Giese moved back to her hometown seven years ago after 35 years away, she realized much had changed. “There were so many new faces,” she said.

Let the Tibetan Monks teach you inner-peace at the Brewery Arts Center. Two workshops today are offered as part of the Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour.

Ascent Runs begins their half marathon series today with a race through Carson Canyons, and it is sure to get your heart pumping.
