Sunday funday has arrived. You’ve got one last chance to hear the rumble down at Battle Born Harley – Street Vibrations is coming to a close. If you happen to be up very early on Saturday morning, you may just see some runners in the pre-dawn hours. The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile relay, passes through Carson City on its way to Virginia City. A huge congratulations goes out to the Class of 2017; the Carson High graduates will get their diplomas today. It’s wine walk weekend, so downtown will be hopping with sippers, strollers, and plenty of summer fun. Keep reading, and you’re sure to find something to make this weekend special.

Memorial Day in Carson City is never just a single day event.

Here in the Nevada state capital, it takes four days to make things right for the service men and women buried here who have served and sacrificed over the years.

Historic steam engines from the V&T Railway and the Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM) were awakened from their long winter slumber Saturday morning to mark the start of Carson City's summer season on the rails.

Veterans and families from Carson City volunteered their time at Lone Mountain Cemetery on Friday by placing more than 1,000 flags over the headstones of fallen veterans.

While many think of Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial kick-off to summer, its true purpose is to remember those who we’ve lost in defense of our country. Here are a few ways to honor our heroes over the next few days:


The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is back to full operations just in time for the Memorial Day Weekend and the busy summer season. Construction crews this week completed removal of more than 110,000 square feet of debris and repairs to the tracks on the museum grounds that were damaged by flooding in January.

It’s going to be gorgeous all weekend long, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the sunny weather. The Annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department is a family favorite with free food, activities, and games. Treasure hunters will be kept busy with the Genoa Community Garage Sale, as well as one encompassing the Saratoga Springs area of Johnson Lane. Repairs to the flood-damaged grounds of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City kicked into high gear this week with construction crews working to remove thousands of pounds of sediment, and replace ballast and tracks displaced by January floods.

Most all of the egg hunts are free, but I've made sure to include an entry price if one exists. I’ve listed them by start time, and have the town listed first to make an event near you easy to locate.

SATURDAY, April 15:

Almost two months of closure came to an end Saturday as the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City reopened to the public following water damage caused by January flooding.

What a great start to March. A few days on sunshine under our belt and now it’s wine walk weekend. With fingers crossed, the weather should hold out until it’s over, but be prepared for some wind. The Shrine Circus is in Reno, Girl Scout Cookies are on sale, and we inch closer to the longer days and shorter nights of Spring. You’ll find something for everyone this weekend, whether looking for fun with friends, your little ones, or your special someone. Take a look, and have a great weekend Carson City.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City will reopen Saturday, March 4, with free weekend admission for all.
The museum has been closed since Jan. 8 due to significant damage from floodwaters that inundated the property, damaging the tracks, fire roads and a number of buildings.

Motorists can expect a breezy and wet commute Wednesday morning into and out of Carson City, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the NWS said, and a flood advisory continues for the area until 10 a.m.

Major flooding from run-off west of Curry Street in South Carson City has resulted in some damage to the Nevada State Railroad Museum property, said NSRM Curator of History Wendell Huffman.

Just one last week to go until Hanukkah and Christmas. The Carson Mall is jam-packed full of crafters and unique shops for some of your last-minute gift purchases. Hop in the car and take a tour of the brightly lit downtown and houses throughout the area. Kids will enjoy decorating a cookie at Genoa Candy and Coffee in Carson Lanes; you may as well get there early and bowl a few games first.

Oh baby, it’s cold outside. Jack Frost seems to be working overtime this weekend, bringing temperatures that will barely rise above freezing. I suggest some hot cocoa. Join Santa at Adele’s for pictures, cookies, and something warm to drink, just remember to bring an unwrapped toy to donate.

The one thing scarier for a child than not being home at Christmas is to be fighting cancer at the same time.

But it's a reality for a number of Northern Nevada children and their families this year.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum and the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum, have added an additional Santa Train ride for children in our community who are battling cancer on Dec. 17 in Carson City.

In just two short weeks it will be Christmas Eve. Treat the kids to some quality time with Family Day at A to Zen or at the final performance of ‘Elf Jr. – The Musical.’ Let the Carson City Symphony get you in the spirit of the season at the 33rd Annual Holiday Treat Concert in the Community Center. Bring an unwrapped toy and you’ll get in for free to the Carson Victory Rollers’ annual ‘Season’s Beatings Red and Green Scrimmage.’ Keep reading for some great ways to spend the day.

Brace yourself, Carson City. We could be in for some wet and windy weather this weekend. The more adventurous of you will be participating in the Be Bold, Run in the Cold ‘Run with Rudolph’ 5/10K near Western Nevada College. If you’d rather be indoors, the Carson Mall is hosting a Holiday Craft Fair, and at noon will celebrate the grand opening of Ogres-Holm Pottery. Celebrate a Country Christmas with Mary Kaye and the Kaye Sisters in Genoa or get your Celtic fix at the Brewery Art Center with a performance by County Clarke. Read on for local fun for young and the young-at-heart.

The Santa Train is arriving this weekend and next weekend in Carson City at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Trains operate this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10-11 and next weekend, Dec. 17-18.

Don’t think that Sundays are just for rest, there is plenty to coax you out of your pajamas today. Take a trip with Santa at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Search for treasures and do your Christmas shopping at Fuji Park today, one of the multiple craft shows in town. Enjoy a free concert at the Community Center courtesy of the Capital City Community Band. Dayton is celebrating a small town Christmas tonight; bust out your best ugly sweater and join the fun. Kids won’t want to miss the Santa Train at the State Railroad Museum or one of the two performances of ‘The Peanutcracker’ at the Community Center. Whether you’d like to spend the days indoors or out, there is something for all ages in the Carson City area this weekend.

The turkeys have been cooked, the dishes done, and the largest shopping weekend of the year is off and running. Show some love locally during Shop Small Business Saturday. Great little shops, restaurants, and services offer something unique for those on your gift list. Gift Certificates are never a bad way to go either: who wouldn’t want a massage, a night on the town, or maybe some music lessons? Santa has returned to town and can be found at the Carson Mall or at Billow’s Embroidery. Keep reading and you’ll find some great ways to spend this holiday weekend.

Let’s just call this Nevad-oween weekend. So much crazy fun awaits: whether it’s the celebration of our ‘new’ downtown, Halloween parties for kids and adults alike, or our State Museum’s 75th Anniversary. Start your day at the Museum, hang around for the downtown ribbon cutting and festivities, then join in the costumed fun as Blinky Man hits the streets. Do the time warp at the Brewery Arts Center: the Rocky Horror Picture Show Party starts at 8:30 p.m. This is going to be one amazing weekend, so let’s get this party started.
