Capital City Arts Initiative Awarded National Endowment for the Arts Grant
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 12/09/2014 - 5:16pmNational Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu announced Tuesday that the Capital City Arts Initiative is one of 919 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant.
CCAI is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support an exhibition by artist Katie Lewis in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. Ms. Lewis’ show will open in September 2015.
BRIC Art 5

CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Friday, October 17, from 5 - 7pm. The BRIC is located at 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Carson City Symphony presents Oct. 26 'A Nevada 150 Concert'
Submitted by editor on Thu, 10/09/2014 - 3:37pmThe Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 31st season Sunday, Oct. 26 with "A Nevada 150 Concert" at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater.
The concert includes the Carson City Symphony Chorus directed by Michael Langham, and featured guest artists McAvoy Layne as Mark Twain, poet Shaun Griffin, Native American singer Christina Thomas, and readers Rita Geil and Christina Van Geel. The program begins at 4 p.m.

In “Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press,” 34 one-sided printed pages show the work of noted authors, produced with handset type and relief plates. The exhibit runs Sept. 8 to Oct. 31.
Beatles Flashback tribute band on stage tonight at Carson City Community Center
Submitted by editor on Wed, 08/06/2014 - 12:11pmBeatles Flashback, a Beatles tribute band formed in 2006, will be on stage tonight, Wednesday, at the Carson City Community Center as part of the Jazz & Beyond Carson City Music Festival.
While most people are familiar with Beatles tribute bands that dress up to look like the Fab Four, Beatles Flashback, a group that formed in Sonoma County, Calif., and is now based in Reno, focuses instead on recreating the music that is heard on the original recordings.

"Jazz & Beyond" is a yearly festival put on by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and its sponsors. Admission to this concert is free. Donations are requested and include a chance at a door prize.

English professor releases new book of poems, “Of Dirt and Tar”

The second, full-length collection of poetry by Saraceno, the English department chair at Sierra Nevada College, will be released March 1 by Cherry Grove Collections, with accolades on its jacket by some of the nation's top poets.

2013 Nevada Reads: 'girlchild' by Tupelo Hassman

The Nevada Reads event is sponsored by the Nevada Center for the Book and Nevada Humanities.
Nevada Humanities Scholar Dr. Reginald Stewart will participate in this book discussion, as well. A focus of discussion will be on the eugenics of generational poverty.
