Hello fellow anglers, the 2017 California fishing season has closed in Inyo and Mono counties for lakes and streams. Alpine County rivers and streams have also officially closed for the season. “The goal is to help teach kids how to be more safe in certain circumstances,” said Lindsay Chichester, extension educator with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. “It’s stuff they will face every day. Ultimately, it could prevent a death.”

On September 15, 2017 the annual Nevada bear hunt season opens, and this year 45 hunters have been issued tags to participate in the season that lasts until Dec. 1, or until the quota of 20 black bears has been met, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. The quota in 2016 was 41 bears.

With this year’s wildfires already destroying more than 500 square miles of crucial winter range for antelope and mule deer herds in Elko County, the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners have endorsed several fire related emergency depredation hunts for both deer (doe) and antelope (horns shorter than ears).

CARSON CITY — Nevadans might be surprised to know their state is home to nearly a dozen species of owl, including the great horned owl – the largest nocturnal bird of prey in the state. Owls occupy a variety of habitats throughout Nevada but are seldom seen by the public because much of their activity occurs at night.

With the discovery of illegally planted Northern pike in Comins Lake, the Nevada Department of Wildlife is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the prosecution of the person(s) responsible. Conviction for this crime would be a misdemeanor, but the crime also carries hefty civil penalties that can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.

On any given day, the Nevada Department of Wildlife receives multiple calls from people expressing their concerns and asking questions about the wildlife they see in their communities. While the nature of those calls varies, a common focus of concern is the urban coyote.

YERINGTON, Nev. – The creation of a new Nevada State Park, known as the Walker River State Recreation Area is official. on Wednesday, July 19, the Nevada Division of State Lands accepted the gift deeds facilitated by the Walker Basin Conservancy, and will assign the donated property to the Nevada Division of State Parks for the development and management of the new park along the East Walker River in Lyon and Mineral counties.

The deadline for the Nevada Department of Wildlife second draw of hunting tags is Monday, June 26, 2017. Final results of the second draw will be provided by Friday, July 21. Any tags remaining after the second draw will be sold on a first come, first served basis.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is sponsoring a three hour intro to bow fishing clinic on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. This is an introductory class and all materials will be supplied. The clinic is designed for individuals 18 years and older who are interested in the basics of bow fishing in Nevada.
