With snow reaching Carson City and lower western Nevada elevations this month, many residents have said they've spotted more wildlife including coyotes, bobcats and recently mountain lion.

Recently, SkillsUSA had its Regional Photography Competition, and all five participating CHS students are going to State. SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization serving more than 395,000 high school, college, and middle school students across the nation in trade training programs and technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.

Imagine a line of nearly 200 youthful archers all releasing their arrows toward down-range targets at the same time. In 12 minutes, those archers will shoot a total of 6,000 arrows in one of three flights that will comprise the 2019 annual Nevada National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament.

Due to verified reports involving the likelihood of stray bullets entering into populated areas originating from the discharge of firearms at the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range, a temporary operating schedule was implemented along with the increased presence of Range Safety Officers made available by the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club, the city’s non-profit partner for the operation of the range.

On Saturday, Jan. 12, families came out to the Community Center for our first ever Snowflake Formation Arts and Crafts program through the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department.

Two men drowned and one was injured when their boat sank during a fishing trip at Topaz Lake south of Carson City on Saturday. The injured was admitted for hypothermia to Carson Valley Medical Center and later released, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

UPDATE SUNDAY: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has identified those involved involved in a fatal boating accident that happened Saturday at Topaz Lake. The deceased have been identified as Bert Pederson, 45, of Sparks. Jesse Gregory, 50, also of Sparks, remains missing as of late Sunday morning and is presumed to have drowned. Scott Wise was also involved in the accident, in which the boat they were in capsized, was taken Carson Valley Medical Center. Wise was released from CVMC after treatment.

UPDATE 5:48PM: One body has been recovered from Topaz Lake following a capsized boating accident Saturday, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said.
"There has been the recovery of one deceased person and their identity is pending next of kin notification," DCSO said. "This is still an active incident due to ongoing recovery efforts for the third missing boater who is believed to be drowned."
Topaz Campground and Park will be closed until further notice as soon as the investigation is completed.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a boating accident in the Topaz Lake area.

A boat capsized in the Topaz Lake with three people on board, currently one person has been rescued and being treated for medical needs.

Robbie Sikes is the superintendent of the Empire Ranch Golf Course, and he is sick and tired of geese.

“On any given day when I get in, there are at least a thousand geese out on the greens,” said Sikes. “I’ve tried everything. The repellent doesn’t seem to do anything. People said get a dog to chase them, but I’ve got a lab who chases them every morning and they only fly up in the air and land in the ponds.”

CARSON CITY — Of all the decorations that people put up on Halloween, there is one that Jennifer Newmark, Wildlife Diversity Division chief for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), holds a special affinity towards. Newmark cannot get enough of the bat decorations, just not for the same reasons as most people.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has been actively addressing recent cases of Avian Type C Botulism, an often fatal disease in birds.

“Although not harmful to humans; when waterfowl ingest the toxin produced by the botulism bacteria, the toxin affects the nervous system and leads to progressive paralysis,” said Russell Woolstenhulme, Migratory Game Bird Staff Biologist at NDOW.

Three incidents took place in Lander County on Saturday, Aug. 18: A helicopter crash involving employees with the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), the Sheep Creek Fire, and a burn-over of two firefighters responding to the fire.

Nevada Outdoorsmen in Wheelchairs has announced its 2018 hunt participants. The upcoming hunt commences in Elko, Nev., on August 22, 2018 and will celebrate the organization’s 10th Anniversary. Two hours after the Lights on the Lake fireworks show at Lake Tahoe ended late Wednesday, one of three barges used to launch fireworks in the show caught on fire. No injuries were reported.
