Bacteria forces temporary closure of Carson City pond at Fuji Park
An iron-based naturally occurring bacteria was discovered Monday in Baily Pond at Fuji Park, forcing Carson City Parks and Rec officials to temporarily close the popular south Carson City fishing spot.
What appears be a naturally occurring iron based bacteria, often found in marsh and wetland environments, was observed in the water Monday, according to city officials. Fuji Park is located at 601 Old Clear Creek Rd.
As a precautionary measure and to ensure the health and safety of park users and wildlife, the pond has been temporarily closed for water quality testing, said David Navarro, park operations superintendent.
Carson City is actively working with Nevada Department of Environmental Protection and will coordinate with the Nevada Department of Wildlife once the results are available on an action plan if needed, he said in a press release.
The city regrets any inconvenience and hopes to have the pond re-opened as soon as possible for the public to use and enjoy. For more information, please contact Carson City Parks at 775.887.2262.
