Nugget project: developer and consultant have history of public projects
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Thu, 04/29/2010 - 10:08amToday's Nevada Appeal has a story about how a developer has been selected for the Carson Nugget downtown redevelopment project.
The story mentioned that the developer, P3 Development, built the $64 million Stockton Events Center while Mark Lewis was that city's manager.
But that understates the ties between Lewis and the developer. Looking at the projects listed on P3's website, a large part of their work seems to stem from the City of Stockton, and happened during Lewis' tenure.
Give Big Rigs Room

And there is no better example of that than this week.

Supervisor candidate forum wrap
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Tue, 04/13/2010 - 12:04amA few thoughts about tonight's supervisor candidate forum (you can get our live blog of the event here, and the Nevada Appeal version here):
• All candidates did well. There were no obvious gaffs. A lot of times, these forums expose those not-ready-for-prime-time candidates. Not this time. All spoke well and knew the issues.
Politics and Carson Now
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Sun, 04/11/2010 - 5:09pmSince a lot of people in Carson City know me from my political column that ran for four years in the Nevada Appeal, many asked if Carson Now would follow along the same philosophical slant.
The answer is no. But is Carson Now an "objective" news source? No way.
As someone who enjoys politics and has friends all over the political spectrum, I set out to make Carson Now open to all viewpoints. Anyone can sign up for an account and write whatever they want, subject only to keeping the content PG rated so as not to offend our younger viewers.

Tighter security measures at Carson City capitol building after threats
Submitted by editor on Wed, 03/31/2010 - 2:11pmA letter by an extremist group that told Gov. Gibbons and other governors to resign forced the partial closure of the capitol building in Carson City this morning, multiple news agencies are reporting.
According to the Nevada Appeal www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20100331/NEWS/100339911/1070&ParentProfile=1058 and the Las Vegas Sun, http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/mar/31/state-capitol-security-tightened-after-police-rece/ Nevada Capitol police implemented security measures this morning after law enforcement officials received letters.
Fire on Fairview
Submitted by on Tue, 03/30/2010 - 12:43pmNugget Project Questions: Who owns the land?
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Mon, 03/08/2010 - 9:05amOne of the first questions I heard raised about the Nugget redevelopment project had to do with who would own the land.
Some people have the false impression that the Carson Nugget is donating the land to the city.
As it has been proposed, the new library, public plaza and other pieces paid for by the city would be sitting on land owned by the foundation created by Nugget President Steve Neighbors, in accordance with the wishes of late owner Mae Adams.
30 city employees face layoffs
Submitted by editor on Mon, 03/01/2010 - 10:13pmCarson City is looking at laying off up to 30 employees due to a budget shortfall caused by lower-than-expected sales tax revenues, according to a story by the Nevada Appeal.
Carson Now has learned that Sheriff Kenny Furlong met with his employees and indicated that 10 sworn officers and 16 civilian employees were facing layoffs. The sheriff and fire departments make up almost half of the city's budget.

An article in the Nevada Appeal this morning attempts to get new information from the Nugget Project’s “go to guy,” Steve Neighbors. Neighbors, who is now the owner of the Nugget, is quoted as saying that the project still lacks a developer to shoulder the “private industry” half of the project. That’s about all that’s new from Neighbors, that they STILL don’t have a private partner.
