JoAnne Skelly column: February brings abundance of snow and rain

Normally at this time of year I would be reminding folks to water trees if we haven’t had significant precipitation. Watering now would be an exercise in futility. I’m writing this after 24 inches of snow fell at our house, then three to five inches of rain, followed by another inch of snow, with no end in sight.

Native flowers: What every Nevada bloom lover should know

In Nevada, the most parched state in the nation, flowers grow under rocks. They bloom in ghost towns, wave atop mountains, and bud under neon lights. Explorer John Charles Frémont began cataloging the flora that flourish throughout the State in the 1840s.

RENO, Nev. – Chickadees with better learning and memory skills, needed to find numerous food caches, are more likely to survive their first winter, a long-term study of mountain chickadees has found.

Enhanced spatial cognition and brain power evolves via natural selection, an elaborate study of hundreds of mountain chickadees in the Sierra Nevada has found. Using passive integrative transponder tags in combination with radio frequency identification-equipped feeders, scientists at the University of Nevada, Reno have tracked feeding behaviors and measured learning and memory of these non-migratory birds that live year-round in the high-elevation forest northwest of Truckee, Calif.

Nevada Lore Series: Vikingsholm, Lake Tahoe’s not-so-secret Viking Castle

Vikingsholm, (literally meaning Viking island in the middle of a lake) named after its creator’s love of Scandinavia and viking culture, is a mansion on the shore of Emerald Bay, boasting 30 rooms and perfectly reconstructed viking treasures.

Lora Josephine Knight purchased the property where Vikingsholm now stands for $250,000 (which would be $3.6 million today) in 1928, and immediately began planning her creation. Lake Tahoe, she said, reminded her of the fjords and mountains of Scandinavia. Knight wanted to build a summer home that was reminiscent of the culture.

More snow in forecast this weekend for Northwestern Nevada, Eastern California

Another round of storms will impact the region this weekend. While snow accumulations aren't expected to rival those from last weekend, disruptions to travel could still be significant.

Beginning Friday afternoon, the first in a series of three storms could bring a 30-60 percent chance of snow to the greater Carson City area after 4 p.m. and again after 10 p.m. However, this system is forecast to be weak and should not leave more than an inch on the valley floors.

JoAnne Skelly: Be an informed horticulturist

I am leery when I see "dwarf" mugos (Pinus mugo) sold in stores. The idea of a pine that stays tiny and round is tempting for the interesting shape and texture it brings to a landscape. However, "dwarf" can be misleading.
