Under Reagan, Income Mobility Trumped Income Inequality

Recently, we analyzed the records of the last seven presidential administrations on economic growth and income inequality. The Reagan, Clinton and Nixon/Ford administrations did best, with Bush43, Bush41 and especially Obama the worst.

But income inequality is trumped by income mobility – the ability of people to improve their lot and of one generation to do better than its parents’ generation.

I was honored to attend and cover Saturday's Vietnam War Remembrance and Welcome Home ceremony near the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.

While there, a television image suddenly came to mind of a Vietnam War veteran sitting alone at the counter of a cafe while a young boy and his mother paid attention to a uniformed service man who had just come in.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, in its capacity as the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization, on Wednesday adopted an active transportation plan that will help communities continue to improve transportation options for bicyclists and pedestrians in the basin.

USNS Carson City officially christened at ceremony, remarks by Mayor Crowell

The U.S. Navy christened its newest fast-transport ship, the USNS Carson City EPF-7 at a ceremony Saturday in Mobile, Alabama. Susan Asbury Crowell, wife of Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, and sponsor of the ship, officially introduced it with a bottle of champagne during the ceremony, which also featured Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei.

Carson City mayor, wife to christen USNS Carson City fast transport

The U.S. Navy will christen its newest expeditionary fast transport, USNS Carson City (EPF 7), during a ceremony Saturday, Jan. 16 in Mobile, Ala. Carson City, designated EPF 7, honors the city of Carson City, Nev.

Vice Adm. Joseph P. Mulloy, deputy chief of Naval Operations, Integration of Capabilities and Resources, will serve as principal speaker. Susan Asbury Crowell, wife of the Honorable Robert Crowell, Mayor of Carson City, Nev., will serve as the ship’s sponsor. In a time-honored Navy tradition, she will give the order to “man our ship and bring her to life!”

Lief Larson, Carson City CrossFit First in Northern Nevada to get CrossFit Level 3

Last week, Lief Larson was able to accomplish his goal of becoming a CrossFit Level 3 Trainer (CF-L3). After submitting over 1,500 hours of coaching experience and obtaining his CrossFit Level 2 Certificate, CrossFit Headquarters approved Lief to test for his Level 3 Certificate. He is only the fifth individual in Nevada, and the first CrossFit coach in northern Nevada, to be a Certified CrossFit Level 3 (CF-L3) Trainer. His other CrossFit certifications include CrossFit Powerlifting, CrossFit Mobility, and CrossFit Weightlifting.

Federal transportation bill passage to benefit Lake Tahoe area road projects, transit services

The five-year, $305 billion federal transportation bill passed by Congress and signed into law Friday, Dec. 4 by President Obama includes a provision that will steer additional money to Lake Tahoe communities for roadway improvements and enhanced public transit service.

Tahoe awarded nearly $9 million for bike and pedestrian projects

The California Transportation Commission announced this week that it will award nearly $9 million in Active Transportation Program grant funding to help complete three major bike and pedestrian projects in the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City.

Members of the Lake Tahoe Bikeway Partnership applied for the grants. The partnership formed several years ago to secure funding for critical trail segments to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety and complete the Lake Tahoe Bikeway, a comprehensive multi-use trail network for the Lake Tahoe Region.
