I Love Carson City’s Labor Day Weekend Event Summary: September 5-7

Don’t be scared. I know you’re going to take one look at this list and get overwhelmed with all the things going on in the area. I’ve written an overview of some of the bigger things here, but take a look below for a complete list of everything that the Carson City area offers.

Labor Day Weekend Highlights

Carson City:

  • Treasure hunt on Saturday at the Carson City Historical Society Rummage and Yard Sale at the Forman-Roberts House Museum at 1207 N. Carson St. Free tours of the museum will also be available during the 9am-4pm event.
  • Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum Friday through Monday.

Johnny Mathis revisits UNR campus and his Nevada track-and-field record

Before his gold and platinum selling albums, his 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and his induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame, Johnny Mathis held the high jump record for the University of Nevada, Reno’s Mackay Stadium. The famed singer and entertainer returned to campus Saturday, Aug. 22, to reminisce about his record 6’ 5 1/2” jump set in 1956.

Thousands mourn slain Carson City sheriff’s deputy Carl Howell at funeral service

RENO, Nev. — Carson City Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carl Howell was remembered for his heroism and being a “true warrior” by those who knew him best as they shared their memories among thousands of mourners who gathered for a funeral service Thursday at Reno Events Center.

Howell, 35, died Saturday, August 15, 2015 in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call at an East Carson City home. He was married to wife Rachel and is a father of four children. He was a nine year veteran of the Carson City Sheriff's Office having started serving in March 2006.

Thursday procession for Carson City sheriff's deputy to move through North Carson Street

A funeral procession through Carson City for fallen Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell will be Thursday, 9 a.m. beginning at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office on Musser Street and will move along North Carson Street on its way to services in Reno.

The procession will be led by a fire truck that will carry Howell’s casket past the Nevada State Capitol and proceed north along Carson Street. It will meet up with a larger procession of law officers that will be staged at North Carson Street and College Parkway.

Tickets to board The Polar Express train ride via the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, the annual Carson City family holiday tradition, go on sale online beginning August 20.

Now in its fifth season, the all-ages holiday train will depart Carson City for a series of one-hour round-trip journeys to the magical North Pole.

Community invited to Classic Car Cruise hosted by Carson City elder rehab care center

A community car show — Classic Car Cruise — designed for clients of Ormsby Post Acute Rehab, an elder care facility in Carson City, will be Sunday, Aug. 23. Among car clubs invited to participate are Karson Kruisers and Freaks of Nature. Anyone with a classic car or truck is invited to this event.

You have to adapt to changes in life or you won't survive, a Lake Tahoe area ski resort management executive and Tahoe South stalwart John Rice told business leaders this week at a Lake Tahoe Community College forum.

"Change is happening, Clearly we're in a drought, whether it's here for short term, or long term, time will tell," said Rice, the vice president and general manager of Sierra-at-Tahoe, long considered one of the nation's best managed, economically and environmentally efficient ski resorts. "The ski industry has the most to lose in a drought."

Tickets are going fast for the Sixth Annual V&T Wine, Cheese and Dessert Train, sponsored by the Carson Tahoe Health Auxiliary.

The V&T train event will be held on Saturday, April 18, departing Carson City Eastgate Depot at 10 a.m. for a trip through the Comstock to Virginia City. The train will return to Carson City at 4 p.m. Tickets are $70 per person. Your ticket includes: Wine, Cheese and Dessert to and from Virginia City.
