CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Transportation is celebrating 100 years with historical photos and timeline posted on the Department’s website, as well as an invitation for Nevadans to share their state transportation memories.

The lyrics to the song “Hurt” remind me of a man by the name of William Randolph Hearst. He made and lost fortunes from pioneering “yellow newspaper,” a simple term for gossip papers that had a way of twisting the truth.

Mexico has long been regarded by American palates as the standard-bearer of Latin American cuisine. That's something Jose Escobar hopes to change with La Santaneca, a restaurant he opened in Carson City 21 months ago to honor the food of his native El Salvador.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Glyphs and Houses, with artwork by Amelia Currier in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The free exhibition is available to the public from November 16, 2016 through February 24, 2017.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation, a non-profit organization that offers Dream Flights to U.S. military veterans living in retirement communities and long-term care facilities, received a $5,000 grant from Vital Life Foundation, a Marquis and Consonus Foundation that supports organizations and programs that provide meaning and vitality in the lives of seniors and staff members living and working in long-term care.

The Sierra-Tahoe Branch and Ladies Auxiliary Unit #137 of the Fleet Reserve Association held their Annual Christmas Party at Jethro’s Oven - Grill, Gardnerville. The food was plentiful and enjoyed by everyone, along with fabulous yummy desserts prepared by Brenda Horton, President of the Ladies Auxiliary. A big thank you to Larry Knack and Rick Athenour for arranging the event.

Wonderful raffle prizes were donated by local stores, including a $100 Walmart gift card. Thank you to Sue Higgins for securing the raffle prizes and displaying them so nicely.

Cookies with Santa takes place Saturday, Dec. 17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Cafe at Adele’s, in what has become one of Carson City’s defining holiday events. All money and gifts collected goes to Ron Wood Family Resource Center for Toys for Tots.

Thanksgiving isn't a patriotic holiday per se, but it is full of patriotic feelings as Americans did and should give thanks for our shared blessings as a nation.

For more than a quarter century, Carson City’s own Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights has rung in the holiday season for residents and visitors of the Nevada state capital.

Sierra-at-Tahoe will open this Saturday, Nov. 26, launching the 2016-17 winter season with early season conditions and limited terrain accessed by two chairlifts and two surface lifts.

This Friday night, Oct. 28 the BAC and PPI will celebrate the season with a screening of the original cult classic musical “Rocky Horror Picture Show” at the BAC Performance Hall. A month from its inaugural ride, The Polar Express is on its way to selling out with over 50 percent of tickets sold for the 2016 season. A retired United States Marine gunnery sergeant has been named Nevada Veteran of the Month by the Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS).

Frank Reynolds of Carson City was selected by nomination for his work serving fellow veterans both in the community and statewide.

Tickets for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad’s wildly popular holiday adventure to the North Pole via The Polar Express train will go on sale starting Friday, Aug. 19 at 6 a.m.

High stakes Wild West melodrama and action-packed adventure are on the menu Saturday, Aug. 13, Saturday, Sept. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 8 as passengers board V&T Railroad “Train to Danger” dinner tour. Directed by Carla Wilson and written by John Burkhart, “Train to Danger” tells the story of railroad heiresses, the Pullman sisters, as they are stranded in a snowstorm in Hidden Gulch.

Enthusiasts who restore old cars are their own kind of virtuoso, said Loretta Marcin, president of the Karson Kruzers.
“I always compare car people to artists,” she said. “They have their own different styles and different colors. I just like seeing different versions and different variations.”

Carson City has had the pleasure of welcoming Rowan brothers, Lorin and Chris over the years as they’ve played at Cafe at Adele’s. This year is no different, but with one exception: In addition to opening Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit For The Greenhouse Project, Thursday, July 14, The Rowans also play at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, on the veranda.

Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Seventy-two years ago today, the largest seaborne invasion force the world had ever seen landed on the shores of Northern France, both making and changing history at the same time.

D-Day, June 6, 1944, was the beginning of the end of Nazi rule across Europe.

They are what Penny Reynolds takes with her as she approaches her last day at Carson High School.

The 31-year veteran teacher is retiring from the Carson City School District at the end of this week, leaving behind a legacy of unprecedented success in the CHS Culinary Arts Department.

Gloria Whiterock McDonald has fond memories of her time at Stewart Indian School in Carson City. She was in the eighth grade when she arrived from the Duck Valley Indian Reservation near the Nevada-Idaho line in 1961.
